I am just wondering how a decision tree is different from a normal SQL query with few parameters. e.g I want to determine credit history with different attributes. I can do achieve that with sql query as well. so how better a decision tree will server here?

DT is more like ' Will giving loan to this person result in our loss?' and SQL is more like 'Show me the list of the persons that have similar attributes to the given person' and then you decide whether load should be given or not.
