The year 2018 will be a crucial year for electric vehicles. Manufacturers are speeding up production plans as cities pass new regulations restricting the use of internal combustion engines. At the same time, IESE Professor Marc Sachon notes that another new and different challenge is emerging: what to do with old batteries. Recycling is expensive and countries like China still haven’t invested in that area; secondary markets for used batteries as home generators are small. Also to watch out for: the geopolitics of sources of two strategic minerals in batteries: lithium and cobalt. Zaire holds half the reserves of cobalt, and 60% of lithium reserves are concentrated in just three countries. Cartelization risks, says professor Juan Luis López Cardenete, should not be overlooked. Sustainability is also a crucial trend for the food and beverage industry. Consumers are pushing for healthier, organic and local products. The US has seen the rise of the first companies rating sustainability, explains professor Adrián Caldart, and positive marks can triple demand for some products. In the healthcare sector, sharing information on health outcomes is the main trend. According to Professor Núria Mas, this will shift the debate to what’s really important, measuring whether implementation is efficient, instead of focusing on whether the provider is public or private. Finally, for 2018 banks are expected to recover their profitability as interest rates rise. But as their core business becomes more attractive, Professor Juan José Toribio warns that new and potentially disruptive entrants such as Google or Amazon might start providing financial services.

Which tech will have the greatest impact on our future? See the seven other technologies that are ushering in the fourth industrial revolution: http://plrsig.ht/2vJ0MWs Visit us at: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pluralsight Twitter: https://twitter.com/pluralsight LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/pluralsight Instagram: http://instagram.com/pluralsight Blog: https://www.pluralsight.com/blog With so many technologies emerging on so many fronts, it’s a challenge to keep up. Every advance is billed as “the next big thing.” Combining a report by The McKinsey Global Institute and knowledge of Pluralsight’s subject-matter experts, we’ve compiled a list of 10 technologies that will lead the fourth industrial revolution. As the Institute notes, “Not every emerging technology will alter the business or social landscape – but some truly do have the potential to disrupt the status quo, alter the way people live and work, and rearrange value pools.” 1. Mobile Internet Interfaces, formats, sensors and apps will evolve as mobile computing devices dominate internet connectivity. By 2025, mobile connectivity could be accessed by an additional 4.3 billion people. 2. Artificial Intelligence Machine learning and user interfaces such as speech and gesture recognition technology will advance to increase productivity or eliminate some knowledge work altogether. 3. Virtual and augmented reality Goldman Sachs is betting on the virtual and augmented reality industry to become an $80 billion market by 2025 – it’s around $7 billion right now. Major upgrades will come to technology infrastructure and an ecosystem of apps will form for consumers and enterprises alike. 4. Cloud technology One of the biggest buzzwords of the last decade will continue to impact the next. Nearly all IT services and web apps could be delivered through the cloud with more enterprises using the public cloud as cyber security improves. 5. Internet of Things More than 9 billion devices are currently connected to the internet – that number is estimated to grow between 50 billion to nearly 1 trillion in the next decade. Organizations will face monitoring and securing products, systems, devices and even people. 6. Advanced robotics Advances in artificial intelligence, machine vision, sensors, motors, hydraulics and materials will change the way products and services are delivered. A surge in tech talent for building, operating and maintaining advanced robots will occur. 7. Biometric technology A recent survey of security professionals revealed that 72 percent of companies are planning to drop traditional passwords by 2025. This will give rise to new authorization services for face, voice, eye, hand and signature identification. 8. 3D printing 3D printing could enable unprecedented levels of mass customization and dramatically reduce the cost of supply chains generating an estimated economic impact of $230 to $550 billion annually by 2025. 9. Genomics Genetic engineering technology will grow with faster computer processing speeds. DNA sequencing technologies and advanced analytics will improve agricultural production, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and extend human life expectancy. 10. Blockchain Blockchain is best known in the context of virtual currency Bitcoin, but a recent report showed 64 different use cases of blockchain across 200 companies. Streamlined, secure contracting and transacting will drive commercial use.

Additionally, the sting of buzzwords such as Millennials, gamification, and ‘the cloud’ dulled as each term joined the everyday technology lexicon. However, the trends fueling these milestones show no signs of slowing down, and 2015 is shaping up to be an even more innovative year. Businesses are set to increase technology spending 3.8 percent worldwide to more than $3.8 trillion. As analysts roll out their predictions for the new year, the common thread that ties the biggest tech trends together can be summed up in two words: big data. Today we look at the technology that is going to make an impact in 2018. Something important to note: we are not looking at something that’s going to be implemented in 50 years time. Who cares about that? You care about next year, making your attendees happy, really having technology that is going to change and make your events better. Here are the tools that are going to make an impact. 1. Facial Recognition AI-powered facial recognition will have an impact, especially on large events. If you plan trade shows, concerts, music festivals, sporting events, but also conferences that may have long lines to register. This is where facial recognition comes to play, for two main reasons: the ability to speed up the registration process and security. 2. Influencer Marketing We’re hearing about influencer marketing all over the place, the ability to use influential people to spread the good message about your event. When you think about your speakers and also your attendees, your sponsors, it’s highly likely that they are the influencers of that particular industry. Tools that can help you to find and really analyze the impact of these influencers are really welcome in your marketing mix. Also tools that help us to create a custom landing page and custom messages. 3. Chatbots Chatbots offer the ability to chat with a human-like interface that sounds like a person, it can humanize a lot of communication that we have during an event. A trend for next year is the use of chatbots as feedback mechanism. The way you set up the chatbot is still very important but there are a lot of platforms that simplify the process for you and very great templates that you could use and really increase the conversions dramatically. 4. Personalization Everybody has to be treated as a VIP. Technology tools can allow us to have deep customization and personalization of our communications. There’s no excuse for sending multiple emails to people that have already registered for your event. A lot of technology providers are offering tools that allow us to really segment our audience better. So we’re looking for a technology that streamlines the process better and makes it easier for us to do so because it’s been built for that. Having this layer of extra personal service, we always say that events are about being detailed-oriented, now you have to reflect that attention to details, to your online communication. 5. Voice Voice is permeating our use of technology. If you think about the way we speak to our phone, and ask for things. It has become natural to ask our virtual assistant to do things for us. So how can we harness that power to do easy things during events? Another application of voice could be translation and recording of our voice, so whether it’s live translation or recording of our voice while we speak at events for example, and how we make that become text, that’s really exciting to watch in 2018. In Conclusion 70 trends from marketing and social media, to venues, to destinations, to decor, to food, and what they offer to event planners in one free report. As Nostradamuses everywhere whip out their crystal balls and begin their annual exercise, predicting the next Big Idea/Theme for we’re going to give you our Top 10 predictions, based on an entirely more rigorous and systematic approach. LATEST TECH Data-as-a-Service was a huge theme for the year, one in which we saw strong interest from industries ranging from health wearables and auto manufacturers, to industrial solution providers. The conversation around how to take advantage of data you already own, and develop products that will generate increasing volumes of valuable data, markedly gained in intensity over the last year. This also closely tied into our theme of Cognitive is the New Smart, with all of this data serving as the foundation for AI capabilities. LATEST TECH One trend in which our outlier prediction prevailed over traditional expectations was about the trend of increasing insularity, nationalism and protectionism. it looked as though countries around the world were poised to turn inward and retreat from the global stage. While that did happen in isolated cases, for the most part voters (just about) rejected this continued sentiment in major elections in France, Germany and the Netherlands. LATEST TECH As we look to , we see several common themes emerging: the rapidly growing and transformational nature of technology continues to dominate the conversation, but we can expect it to be paralleled by an increasingly passionate debate about the extent and degree of government and regulatory influence aimed at mitigating the growing power of technology. This will gain momentum as leading tech companies race toward a trillion dollar valuation, and scrutiny of and protection against misinformation and hacking increases. Further in the technology space, we can also expect to see the emergence of themes that were regarded as the preserve of science fiction, such as the testing of flying cars (truly, back to the future!) and the emergence of quantum supremacy. Less tech-focused themes include the rise of a new generation of political leaders and the growing adoption of behavioural science by enterprises, with a focus on optimising both employee productivity and consumer purchase patterns. The Trillion-Dollar Sprint is likely to be the year that a leading Fortune 500 company (think tech titans Apple, Google, Microsoft or Amazon, with petroleum giant Saudi Aramco crashing the tech party) surpasses the trillion dollar valuation mark. The Innovation Tug-of-War LATEST TECH Rising concerns regarding technology companies’ increasing power is driving pushback from government organizations, and we expect this trend to gain momentum in Greater government and regulatory oversight is likely to protect consumers and curb corporate overreach, but may also stunt innovation. Underscoring this trend will be the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which comes into effect in mid- as well as adjusted net neutrality rules in the US. The Quantum Leap Long the domain of science fiction and theory, quantum computing looks poised to outperform traditional supercomputers and achieve supremacy in . Competitors in the space are aggressively racing to increase their qubit computing power, while minimizing the potential for errors. Experimentation of quantum computing in conjunction with encryption, AI, materials, and qubit generation will be key areas of focus in. Be ready to hear “Quantum” as the next buzz word. LATEST TECH Flying Cars Reach for the Skies Get ready to throw out the conventional road safety rule book. You might not have to check skywards just yet when you cross the , testing their flying vehicle models, with more expected in .
