Challenge for SMEs in South Africa

04:19
South African entrepreneurs or small business owners looking for financing to start or expand a business, have become accustomed to banks and venture capital firms slamming the door in their face. Lack of financing is a perennial challenge for SMEs in South Africa as well as smaller businesses in many other parts of the world. According to the Sage Business Index for 2013, 63% of South African businesses agree that banks aren't doing enough to make funding available to small businesses. Just over half of South African businesses say they need to look at alternative funding sources. But is there alternative sources for funding? Earlier I spoke to …..Steven Cohen, Managing Director of Sa Pastel Accounting and I asked him why are business creditors not fully supportive and skeptical about funding small business? and this is what he had to say.

The Big Lie of Small Business | Vusi Thembekwayo | TEDxUniversityofNamibia

17:58
A small Business can be a success, a small business doesn't have to stay small. Africa like many places is full of small businesses and struggling entrepreneurs, from small shop owners to street vendors. Vusi challenges the African business community as a whole to help grow these entrepreneurs as most businesses need capital and other forms of support from the more well established businesses and for bankers to play their part. As a continent Africa can become an economic giant of the world. Known as a "Rock star of public speaking" Vusi is the only speaker globally to have been invited to the Dragon's Den as an investor. This is because he has built several businesses. Today, as Chairman of Watermark Afrika Fund he is spearheading a pan-African process of raising the largest Growth Fund of high growth, high potential entrepreneurs in Africa. DISCUSSION: Why do small businesses fail?

10:56
Small businesses are routinely touted as key drivers of economic growth and employment in South Africa, but statistically the reality is that on average about 50% of all start-up businesses in South Africa fail within 24 months and 70% to 80 % of small businesses fail within the first five years. Against this backdrop, it stands to reason that there would be a great deal of apprehension and anxiety by would be entrepreneurs, but what can be done to avoid becoming part of the negative statistics? Our next guest says he knows just how to assist some of these startups. Welcome Marketing & Sales thought leader, Thulani Thabethe. For more news, visit: sabcnews.com

SMEs have been identified as productive drivers of inclusive economic growth and development in South Africa and around the world. They are considered an important contributor to the economy as drivers for reducing unemployment, especially since the formal sector continues to shed jobs. SMEs foster diversification through their development of new and unsaturated sectors of the economy. For more analysis on the SMEs, I am joined in studio by experienced entrepreneur and Co-Master Licensee of ActionCOACH SA, Harry Welby-Cooke. For more news, visit: http://www.sabc.co.za/news

NDP recognises small business as the future engines of growth

The National Development Plan recognises small business as the future engines of growth. The Franchise Association of South Africa contends that franchising remains one of the most successful business formats and contributes extensively to entrepreneurship, skills transfer and job creation. Recently the Minister of Small Business, Lindiwe Zulu, singled out franchising as one of the areas her department will focus on to help grow the economy. So the focus is on franchising and we're joined by the chairman of FASA, John Baladakis, who is a multiple store Pick n Pay franchisee. And Kurt Geneapril who is a franchisee in Weltevreden park, running a Jimmy's Killer Fish and Chip shop. Knowledge-Sharing Workshop on SME Development in South Africa

06:24
With the establishment of a new department for small business development, the South African government is reaffirming its commitment to job creation through SMEs as it seeks to find innovative and effective ways to nurture and develop the sector. In this context, a knowledge-sharing workshop on SME development was organised on 30 July 2014 by the Technical Management Support (TMS) Project managed by National Treasury, the General Representative of the Government of Flanders in South Africa and the International Labour Organization (ILO). The workshop centred around the theme: “Innovative models for Supporting SMEs in South Africa: What do we know, what can we do, and how will it stimulate job creation?” and aimed to stimulate debate among government departments, private sector organizations, academia and civil society on different models and lessons learned regarding SME development and job creation. The workshop was based on inventive knowledge-sharing methodologies allowing participants to exchange thoughts, to develop new ideas and formulate suggestions for increasing the effectiveness of support to the sector.
