This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. We’ll give you three examples to best build a go-to-market strategy that will help you make money and drive long-term growth. Let's take a look at the companies, their buyers, and their strategy. At the end I'll give you a model for working this out for yourself. Desktop Computers For my first example, let's take a company that wants to own the desktop computing market. Firstly, come up with something that's truly amazing and different, clever, unique. Take that to as broad a market as you possibly can, and this is what the company I'm about to talk about did. Take it to as broad a market as you possibly can. Find out from that early market experience what group of buyers are likely to be a good market for you to focus on in the future. Start very broadly, selling very widely. Find the pattern and then find a niche that you think might be worth dominating, and then completely change the strategy and focus just on that. Leader in an enterprise software category For my second go to market strategy example, I'm going to pick an established player in an established market. Very different story. This established player in an established market had done such a good job of riding the enterprise applications market, that they were near dominant in that space. That's good news, but it's also bad news. The bad news is that pretty much all of the market, the enterprise market, had already bought either from this company, or from one of their competitors. Whilst they enjoyed the lion's share of the market, the market was pretty much drying up. Everybody had bought a product like this from either them or from their competitor. Challenger in enterprise software For my third go to market strategy example, again I'll stick to a mature market, but this time the company's not the gorilla. In fact, they're probably fourth on a good day. Maybe less, maybe fifth or sixth in the market. It's a big market, and they've done well, they've profited, and they've used those profits to continue to invest in sales and marketing as well as R&D. The problem is that as the market started to decline, their fortunes declined. They'll continue to invest, but they're investing in order to grow their share in a market that was pretty much consolidating. Now we're losing money hand over fist. What's the right strategy then? This process is called short selling (or shorting). Short selling isn’t all peaches and cream. There are opportunities for high returns, but as usual, these come with high risks. The big risk here is that there is no limit to your losses. When you buy a stock, you can only lose the amount that you invested. But when you short, your losses are infinite because there is theoretically no end to how high a stock’s price can rise. Short selling isn’t for everyone. It requires a lot of time and research, and a desire for high risks and high returns. Short selling is primarily used for speculator looking to make a profit when the market goes down or investing looking to hedge their position. Many salespeople are so scared of potential rejection that they hold back when it comes to taking risks with cold calling.                                 Cold Calling Step #2: Make cold calling a game.Cold calling is about numbers. It’s about pushing through potential rejection until you ultimately get through to a prospect who’s a good fit, is willing to have a conversation with you, and might lead to a next step.                                 Cold Calling Step #3: Be willing to take risks. I know it might seem like this step is repeating some earlier ideas, but it’s so important, I can’t emphasize this enough.                         Cold Calling Step #4: Warm it up as much as possible.I don't mean get warmed up for the call; I mean warm up the actual cold calling interaction with the prospect as much as possible—before it happens.                                              Cold Calling Step #5: Script out the entire call.I get more pushback on this idea than almost any other sales advice I give. So many salespeople tell me, “Oh, I don’t like to use a script. It makes me sound scripted.” My response is always the same.                                 Cold Calling Script #6: Know your first seven seconds cold.We don't often think about how we're initially introducing ourselves to prospects.                                Cold Calling Step #7: The more you talk about you, the worse you do.The data shows that when salespeople talk about themselves or their own companies, they do significantly worse with prospects. The more you talk about yourself when cold calling, the worse you’ll do.                                 Cold Calling Step #8: Focus on the challenges you're seeing.During cold calling, one of the best ways to engage prospects in conversation is to focus on the challenges you're seeing in the marketplace. This will show that you have your finger on the pulse of what's actually happening.                                 Cold Calling Step #9: Engage them to start talking.As I said before, the more prospects start to talk in a meaningful way, the more likely they are to stay on the phone with you, and the most likely you are to schedule a next step that turns into a sale. While so many salespeople are focused on pitching whatever it is that they sell, they should instead be engaging prospects in a true dialogue.                                 Cold Calling Step #10: Dig into what's really going on.Once you’ve got the prospect talking, don’t go into pitch mode. When a prospect says, "Actually, one of the challenges we're dealing with is this," don't say, "Well, I've got the solution for you!"                                 Cold Calling Step #11: Get that next step locked in.This is the most important part of cold calling. You absolutely must establish a next step. I always ask salespeople, “What's the purpose of a prospecting call, or a cold call?” They respond, “To get a sale.” But that’s not true.          Cold Calling Step #12: Confirm the next step.When you get someone to agree to a meeting, while you're on the phone with them, send out a calendar invite. Make sure that it gets into their inbox, and that they accept the invite.                                                                Cold Calling Step #13: Don't run away from the phone after each call.As I said before, cold calling is about numbers. It’s about making a lot of dials. The difference between cold calling that’s effective and cold calling that gets you nowhere is simply a matter of picking up the phone right after you hang up with your last prospect. Get right back onto the phone, dial the next number, and keep pushing through.                                 So, there you have it. We are going to talk about how to use options for longer term investments. However, you can still use some of the strategies and concepts I’ll share with you in a shorter time frame. What are LEAPS? LEAPS are Long Term Equity Anticipation Security, but basically, it’s just a long-term option. Long term means a different thing for everybody, it can be 6 months, a year, two years, five years, etc. However, in my opinion, this means holding options for more than 60 days, anything beyond that are longer term holds. Disadvantages of trading option LEAPS - They are higher total cost - Change in price makes you less money - Bid-ask spread can be a problem - Volatility can shift and create issues with the position Advantages of trading option LEAPS - Lower cost for the time you hold - Less time decay - Longer life for the strategy to work - You can still make money from time decay You can use option LEAPS in all sorts of ways. You can use them to make some money from time decay, and you can reduce your risk by using less of your capital to make more money.
