The Power of Logistics | Terry Esper | TEDxOhioStateUniversitySalon

12:54
For people in certain careers, it can be difficult to see the lasting effect or significance of their work. Terry Esper dives into his journey on how he made the connections between his ancestry, family, and his work in logistics, and how those connections changed the way he thought about his work. Terry describes his "lightbulb moment" and how he has gained a deeper satisfaction from his work due to the connections that he has made. Dr. Terry L. Esper is Associate Professor of Logistics at the Fisher College of Business of The Ohio State University. In addition to his full-time academic activities, Esper also serves as Co-Chair of the Academic Strategies Committee for the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals, and is an Educational Advisor to the Health and Personal Care Logistics Conference. He has published several articles on issues associated with retail logistics and supply chain management strategy in leading academic and managerial outlets, including Journal of Business Logistics, Journal of Operations Management and Journal of Retailing. In addition, he is a regular speaker at global conferences, where he builds on his research insights and accumulated experiences to engage in dialogue regarding trends and issues in logistics and supply chain management practice, and is a regular featured guest on a Sirius XM Radio show. Prior to his Doctoral studies in Marketing and Logistics at the University of Arkansas, Esper worked for Hallmark Cards as a Transportation Manager and was involved in transportation infrastructure research for the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Operations research

25:33
Operations research, or operational research in British usage, is a discipline that deals with the application of advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions. It is often considered to be a sub-field of mathematics. The terms management science and decision science are sometimes used as synonyms. Employing techniques from other mathematical sciences, such as mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, and mathematical optimization, operations research arrives at optimal or near-optimal solutions to complex decision-making problems. Because of its emphasis on human-technology interaction and because of its focus on practical applications, operations research has overlap with other disciplines, notably industrial engineering and operations management, and draws on psychology and organization science. Operations research is often concerned with determining the maximum (of profit, performance, or yield) or minimum (of loss, risk, or cost) of some real-world objective. Originating in military efforts before World War II, its techniques have grown to concern problems in a variety of industries. This video is targeted to blind users. 50 Million Nanostores: Researching mom and pops in emerging economies

59:28
By Jan C. Fransoo Kuehne Logistic University Abstract Virtually all research on retail operations has been focused on organized retail: retail chains or online retail brands that operate a more or less centrally controlled and operated network of outlets. In most countries of the world, however, the majority of retail sales is realized in independent, family operated stores. While there is a large variety of these stores, we denote these stores by the generic name nanostores. In this talk, I will outline the major characteristics of nanostores, their store and supply chain operations, and their specific institutional context which leads to very different research questions and operational challenges. I will illustrate some of the research work we have conducted over the past years in this domain using formal modeling, qualitative analysis, and field experimentation. I will conclude by discussing some recent developments, in particular related to the entry of new technologies and new hard-discount formats entering into this traditional channel. About the speaker Jan C. Fransoo is Professor of Operations Management & Logistics at Kuehne Logistics University in Hamburg, Germany. He also serves as the University’s Dean of Research and Member of the Executive Board. He joined KLU in 2018 following a tenure of 22 years at Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands, where he still holds a courtesy professorship in its School of Industrial Engineering. Fransoo holds a Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Operations Management and Logistics, both from Eindhoven University of Technology. Professor Fransoo’s research studies operations, logistics, and supply chain management decision making in the retail, chemical, food, pharmaceutical and transport industries. His current research focuses in particular on retail distribution and channel management in developing markets, on intermodal container transport, and on sustainability and social responsibility in supply chains. His recent co-edited books include “Reaching 50 Million Nanostores: Retail Distribution in Emerging Megacities” and “Sustainable Supply Chains: A Research-Based Textbook on Operations and Strategy”. Fransoo has published both modeling and empirical research in over 120 academic journal articles and book chapters, in journals such as Management Science, Production and Operations Management, Operations Research, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, European Journal of Operational Research, and Journal of Operations Management. He is Associate Editor of multiple journals, including Operations Research, Production and Operations Management, and Decision Sciences Journal. More details, including a full publication list and his blogposts, can be found on https://www.janfransoo.com/.

Operations management

29:43
Operations management is an area of management concerned with overseeing, designing, and controlling the process of production and redesigning business operations in the production of goods or services. It involves the responsibility of ensuring that business operations are efficient in terms of using as few resources as needed, and effective in terms of meeting customer requirements. It is concerned with managing the process that converts inputs into outputs . The relationship of operations management to senior management in commercial contexts can be compared to the relationship of line officers to highest-level senior officers in military science. The highest-level officers shape the strategy and revise it over time, while the line officers make tactical decisions in support of carrying out the strategy. In business as in military affairs, the boundaries between levels are not always distinct; tactical information dynamically informs strategy, and individual people often move between roles over time. EA, Take Two, Ubisoft & Activision PAYS $50,000 per Hour to Promote Call of Duty & New Video Games. Twitter - https://twitter.com/SKizzleAXE Instagram - http://instagram.com/skizzleaxe Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/SKizzleAXE MW4 reveal trailer is just right around the corner. We're hearing that MW4 teaser trailers will come next week and then an official Modern Warfare 4 reveal trailer will drop. New Wall Street Journal article claims publishers pay big streamers up to $50,000 an hour: https://charlieintel.com/new-wall-street-journal-article-claims-publishers-pay-big-streamers-up-to-50000-an-hour/54215/ The Wall Street Journal has released a new article providing an overview of how some of the gaming industry’s biggest publishers attract the top streamers to promote their newest games at launch and as part of new game updates. The report highlights that publishers like EA, Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, and Take-Two pay some of the largest streamers to promote their games. The report states that some of the top celebrities on Twitch, like Ninja, can earn up to $50,000 an hour from these publishers for playing their new game on streams. When these promoted streams are happening, the streamer has an “Ad Content” box and #ad in their streams. Electronic Arts Inc., Activision Blizzard Inc., Ubisoft Entertainment SA and Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. are among the publishers making hefty payouts for the real-time broadcasts, or live streams. The amounts vary depending on the popularity of the “streamer,” and could go as high as $50,000 an hour for top celebrity gamers, according to talent and marketing agents. The article also revealed that Take-Two plans to pay a large number of streamers to play Borderlands 3 upon its release this September. This step towards using Twitch streamers as a promotional tool is becoming very effective for publishers, as large amount of fans will be wanting to try what their favorite streamers are playing. Apex Legends was one of the games that seemed to effectively utilize this strategy as part of their launch, paying many, many streamers to play the title as part of the launch week for the game. One report stated the EA paid Ninja $1 million to play Apex Legends during its launch window. Coveted live-streamers, those who attract at least 15,000 viewers at once, can command between $25,000 and $35,000 an hour during a big launch, with the most popular ones earning more, according to Reed Duchscher, chief executive of Night Media Inc., a management firm that represents streamers and other online personalities. Activision Publishing has also gotten on with this new trend. With the launch of Black Ops 4’s newest Operations in 2019, Activision has been promoting the new Operations with #ad streams with streamers like Ninja, CouRage, TimTheTatMan, and more. This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Operations research Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. Further, the term 'operational analysis' is used in the British (and some British Commonwealth) military as an intrinsic part of capability development, management and assurance. In particular, operational analysis forms part of the Combined Operational Effectiveness and Investment Appraisals (COEIA), which support British defense capability acquisition decision-making. It is often considered to be a sub-field of applied mathematics. The terms management science and decision science are sometimes used as synonyms.Employing techniques from other mathematical sciences, such as mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, and mathematical optimization, operations research arrives at optimal or near-optimal solutions to complex decision-making problems.
