South Africa's Amplats to axe 14,000 miners' jobs
http://www.euronews.com/ The world's top platinum producer, Anglo American Platinum, has announced it is cutting up to 14,000 South African miners' jobs as part of a restructuring plan. It is thought the move could trigger a repeat of last year's strikes when around 50 people died. The unrest was rooted in a union turf war and aggravated by income disparities within the industry and low wages for dangerous work. If 14,000 jobs are lost, it will represent around three percent of South Africa's mine labour force and set back government efforts to cut unemployment from over 25 percent. Anglo American, which owns about 80 percent of Amplats, has seen demand and its fortunes fade in recent years and aims to cut output by around a fifth, or 400,000 ounces. South Africa seals mining jobs deal, proposes platinum plan
Players in the mining industry have declared their commitment to saving jobs. But it's unclear if the declaration signed today can stop a wave of retrenments that threatens to crash down. And union AMCU was once again conspicuous by their absence at the signing ceremony. Up to 19 thousand jobs are at stake - which will worsen the plight of mining communities and is something that South Africa, with an unemployment rate above 25 percent, can ill afford. The Department of Minerals, the Chamber of Mines and Labour representatives all agreed to ten points or interventions. South Africa strives to save jobs at under-fire mines
South Africa's mining ministry held talks with companies and unions over planned job cuts on Wednesday, as President Jacob Zuma's government frets over high unemployment ahead of key elections next year. The mining industry, which contributes around 7 percent to Africa's most developed economy, is struggling with sinking commodity prices, rising costs and labor unrest. "It's about jobs, jobs, jobs and none of us should leave this place without committing something to the table," mining minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi told reporters. Zuma's African National Congress (ANC) heads into local elections next year with its main rival the Democratic Alliance (DA) targeting wins in key metropolitan areas, including Gauteng, home to economic hub Johannesburg. The DA will target the ANC on its inability to reduce stubbornly high unemployment, which officially stands at 25 percent but some experts believe is much higher. Ramatlhodi on Tuesday ordered Glencore to suspend operations at its 10 million tonne-a-year Optimum coal mine because the mining group hadn't followed legal procedure in its plan to cut 380 jobs at the mine. Glencore has said it complied with all legal requirements relating to job cuts. The DA described the suspension at Optimum as a "panic move" that will make jobs losses worse. Ramatlhodi said talks with Glencore had taken place overnight and he hoped to be able to lift the mine suspension if the company met government directives. The mines ministry is also mediating between Glencore and power utility Eskom after a spat between the two companies over the price the state-owned company pays for coal. South Africa is facing potentially its biggest-ever power crisis as Eskom imposes regular power cuts due to insufficient generation capacity, pushing up costs for industry and hampering already sluggish economic growth. In a blow to the government's job protection plans, state-controlled Scaw Metals Group said on Wednesday it could also shed as many as 1,000 jobs in South Africa. The gold sector's two biggest unions have rejected a 17 percent wage increase offer from producers, including AngloGold, Harmony and Sibanye, stringing out pay negotiations and raising the prospect of strikes. Unions representing workers at coal producers also dismissed a wage offer from employers' body, the Chamber of Mines and said negotiations were not making progress. Platinum producers, including Lonmin, Anglo American Platinum and Impala Platinum, have also clashed with unions and government over their plans for job cuts. Lonmin has said it was planning to close or mothball several mine shafts in a bid to survive plunging prices, putting 6,000 South African jobs at risk.

Glencore to cut 380 jobs at South African coal mine
Glencore's Optimum Coal mine in Mpumalanga has come under fire for serving more than 600 employees with retrenchment letters. Female staffers affiliated to the National Union of Mineworkers today staged a protest at the mines' offices- claiming most of those who are affected are women. But the mine's management has refuted this - saying only 15 percent of those affected are female staffers...http://owl.li/PWXcB For more News visit: http://www.sabc.co.za/news Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/SABCNewsOnline?lang=en Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SABCNewsOnline

🇿🇦 Platinum giant to cut more than 13,000 jobs in South Africa | Al Jazeera English
The world's second-largest platinum producer says it will cut more than 13,000 jobs in South Africa over the next two years. Impala Platinum says it is because of lower commodity prices and soaring production costs. The miners' union has said it will not accept the job cuts and is threatening industrial action. The cuts come as South Africa commemorates the sixth anniversary of the Marikana massacre when 34 miners were shot dead by police during a wage strike. Anglo-American mine closes 4 shafts and threatens to cut 14,000 jobs

Various of security fencing being worked on 6. Mid of Anglo Platinum train STORYLINE: Disgruntled mine workers began gathering at an Anglo American Platinum mine in Rustenburg on Wednesday, a day after the world's largest platinum producer said it would close some of its operations, sell one mine in South Africa, and cut 14-thousand jobs. The announcement, made on Tuesday, comes just months after South African mining strikes in turned violent, killing dozens of people. Anglo American Platinum said a nearly year-long review found that four mine shafts needed to be closed and one mine sold because of unprofitable operations. The government's minister of mines and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) expressed surprise and shock at the announcement. Disgruntled workers gathered on Wednesday outside the Khomanani 1 Shaft, one of the shafts due for closure at the mine. Some 46 people were killed during a six-week period of violent strikes at Lonmin's platinum mine last year in Marikana, South Africa, when miners demanded higher wages. In the most shocking incident, police fired into a crowd of striking miners near the Marikana mine on August 16, killing 34 people. The labour unrest spread in South Africa, and Anglo American Platinum, known locally as Amplats, saw a more than eight-week strike that crippled the giant at its operation in Rustenburg, about 100 kilometres (60 miles) northwest of Johannesburg. The company had fired 12-thousand workers and then agreed to reinstate them in October, though the miners did not return to work until November. Amplats on Tuesday said that 13-thousand of the jobs it wants to cut are in the Rustenburg region. Anglo American Platinum said it takes its social responsibilities to its laid-off workforce seriously, and would try to create 14-thousand new jobs focused on housing, infrastructure and small business development. The mining industry is a huge part of the economy in South Africa, which is the world's largest producer of platinum, gold and chromium. Most mine workers who carry out manual labour are black. The South African Institute of Race Relations says that the unemployment rate for black South Africans was nearly 41 percent in 2012, while the corresponding rate for white South Africans was 7.5 percent. South Africa jobs hostage to foreign demand
Figures from South Africa show unemployment rose by three per cent in May, as demand from Europe and Asia fell. The transport and mining sectors were the worst hit, with 12 per cent fewer jobs available last month. As a result of the unpredictable demand from foreign markets, employers rarely offer full-time jobs to their employees and competition is harsh. The general-secretary of the national union of metal workers believes South Africa must take measures to ensure the country is not dependent on outside forces. Al Jazeera's Tania Page reports from Johannesburg.

Saving jobs in the Mining sector: Joseph Montisetsi
Players in the mining industry have declared their commitment to saving jobs. But it's unclear if the declaration signed today can stop a wave of retrenchments that threatens to crash down. INTERVIEW: South Africa's Mining Charter raises black ownership threshold to 30%, from 26%
Between 2012 and end 2016, South Africa's mining sector shed some 70,000 jobs. Last week alone, Sibanye Gold fired another 1,500 for taking part in an illegal strike.
