Alarmed by the nonsensical ideas of Transactional Analysis, Patrick Vermeren set out on a mission to reveal the truth about the many HR theories, models and questionnaires. The academic literature revealed that most HR practices (in recruitment, assessment, development, coaching…) are very problematic and some even dangerous. To be bold, implementing digital marketing strategies could be game-changing for HR departments. And there is a ton of low-hanging fruit - quick results, as well as long-term gain. After two decades in HR (training, career development, OD) I became preoccupied with digital marketing, and for the last few years I've pursued it as a career (and last year launched my own digital agency), But I can't stop thinking about HR (it's a disease!). The more I learn about digital strategies the more I can see how they could apply to HR initiatives and make a huge difference - in recruitment, engagement, productivity, etc. First, these strategies can be used to help HR market itself! My position on this is pretty simple, that HR tends to suck at marketing (not to be too harsh, but it's never been our strong suit). And there are some technologies and proven practices that are commonly used in digital marketing that could benefit HR in terms of their own promotion. But these same technologies can help HR fulfill its mission by improving results in key initiatives, and by providing more value, they will also have more to promote. It's a virtuous circle. So I made this video where I just talk (perhaps a bit too much) about some specific ways to leverage emerging digital strategies to support HR initiatives (and therefore core business initiatives). Development can benefit both organizations and employees. Development involves efforts to improve employees’ abilities to handle a variety of assignments and to cultivate their capabilities beyond those required by the current job. Development differs from training. It is possible to train people to answer customer service questions, drive a truck, enter data in a computer system, set up a drill press, or assemble a television. However, development in areas such as judgment, responsibility, decision making, and communication presents a bigger challenge. These areas may or may not develop through individuals’ ordinary life experiences. There is a close link between learning and development. For most people, lifelong learning and development are necessary and desirable. For many professionals, lifelong learning may mean meeting continuing education requirements to retain certifications. Assistance needed from employers for lifelong development typically comes through programs at work, including tuition reimbursement programs. Like employee training, employee development begins with an analysis of the needs of both the organization and the individuals within that organization. The goal, of course, is to identify strengths and weaknesses to determine the focus of development. Methods that organizations use to assess development needs include assessment centers, psychological testing, and performance appraisals. Determining the best approach to individual development depends in part on the individual’s level of development. Development of human resources is all about finding the right strategy to help better your people.

HR - Human Resources Humor During a recent conference for the HR State Council of New Hampshire, I discovered I was in a room full of people who truly care about others, want to help others...and like to laugh. HR is a high-pressure job. Sometimes they have to enforce rules and policies that might not be popular, but are necessary. We spent an hour together and I absolutely loved them. We discussed how poorly they are marketed, how they have their own theme song (and it's not exactly 'Happy' by Pharrell) and the problems that Sesame Street's Human Resources Department would have with Oscar the Grouch. Bring it to HR whether they can solve it or not, this is your first stop for a good gripe, whinge and moan. They're "the people people" they can take it. Ignore any advice they give. Equally never make responsible complaints at a time when HR can help but wait until taking legal action. HR managers are magicians with powers over the law, other employees, insurance agencies and CEOs -- so always complain to get the magic on your side! Know Tabloid Law and Work The System Get your knowledge of employment law from papers, the internet and TV and quote this to make your trip to a massage parlour in Amsterdam an acceptable expense and your unofficial duvet days seem entirely reasonable. Work the system as much as possible using every PC technique in the book, know your "rights" and always say "my friend is a lawyer". Apply for a Job Like This... First don't read the instructions in the advertisement, then apply in text speak/ bad spelling/ capitals with no covering letter when you clearly do not meet the essential criteria (which you haven't read). NB: Agencies can be used to help with this, if you work for one HR like to be called daily. As a candidate, turn up late for the interview and know nothing about the organisation. If a manager recruit your mates, old school friends and relatives not those who can do the job. Use Management Jargon (or refuse to understand their's) "delayering, rightsizing, leverage, disconnect, synergy, blue sky thinking and cross fertilisation" as examples. Add your own in the comments. Fluff Them HR may seem an integral part of the business team but we all know they are the fluffy, touchy feely hippies that doesn't really have any financial merit so remind them of this at any opportunity! HR is easy, anyone could do it! Oh, and because they're so fluffy get them to have your difficult conversations, make your complaints and do the firing for you. Training and Conferences Book onto expensive training HR has taken time to organise and then don't show up -- heh you're busy! If there's a conference in central London or some exotic city show up late and then leave at lunch to do a bit of shopping and see some old friends and relatives. Only jerks don't take the perks!
