Why choose to use Hotmail for your business and personal correspondence? Here are a few facts that might persuade you to create a new Hotmail account.
Hotmail has over 400 million current users. It's free to set-up and use and comes with 5GB worth of storage space and 25GB of space on their Cloud storage. The base user plan is free, but business owners can pay to have their own Domain Name and more storage added. It’s the second largest email service, second only to Yahoo. It’s also the most professionally acceptable email service that is recognized both for personal usage and in business.
Besides email, Hotmail offers a rich Text editor, a great calendar features and a personal planner.
Fun fact: it was first launched on July 4, 1996, on Independence Day.
Convinced? Here is a small guide to help you create a new Hotmail account.
In your favourite Web browser, type in https://outlook.live.com/owa/ and navigate to the top right corner of the page, where a “Create Account” button is shown. Click on the button and follow the instructions.
You will be prompted to fill out your Username and Password fields. In the first field type out your desired unique Username. Once you do that, on the right side of the box you’ll see a drop down menu with a list of the available domains for you email.
In the field below, you’ll be prompted to input your desired password. Based on the Terms and Conditions, this password needs to contain a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. Please don’t be tempted to use personal information such as your Birthday, your Spouse's birthday, or a single word. The harder your password is, the less chance there is of you losing your private information and data. A combination of two words, a catch-phrase of sorts that you will remember, with a random series of digits before and after it works best.
Warming: if your password is considered too weak or inappropriate by the Microsoft algorithm, you will be returned to this menu and be forced to complete steps 3 and 4 again.
Microsoft offers promotional emails containing discounts and information on updates as a part of the Sign up process. Most of these are background information so feel free to un-tick the box so you don’t receive any.
Type in your First and Last name in the fields. Make sure you type it correctly as once the account has been set up it is a hassle to make changes in the personal information tab.
Choose your Country/Region from the dropdown menu. After that set your Birth Date details and click next. Make sure you choose your country of residence, rather than your country of Birth.
Almost there. The last part of registering for a Hotmail account is passing the CAPTCHA test. This is a simple test that checks for bots and autofill programs. Simply type out what you see on the provided image, usually a random word or a series of letters and numbers. If you find the CAPTCHA too difficult you can request a new image with a simpler phrase. Hotmail provides you with an audio file in combination with the image for the vision impaired.
Once the verification has been cleared, you’ll be prompted to set up your time zone and customize the look of your profile. Most times, Hotmail sets your timezone based on your country choice, but take a minute to check it just in case.
Once that has been checked you are free to go, your new Hotmail Account is ready.
