However, the rapidly changing situation in Europe during 1940, as well as domestic political upheaval, undermined this stance. Fascist political forces such as the Iron Guard rose in popularity and power, urging an alliance with Nazi Germany and its allies. As the military fortunes of Romania's two main guarantors of territorial integrity—France and Britain—crumbled in the Fall of France, the government of Romania turned to Germany in hopes of a similar guarantee, unaware that the then dominant European power had already granted its consent to Soviet territorial claims in a secret protocol of 1939's Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. In summer 1940 a series of territorial disputes were diplomatically resolved unfavorably to Romania, resulting in the loss of most of the territory gained in the wake of World War I. This caused the popularity of Romania's government to plummet, further reinforcing the fascist and military factions, who eventually staged a coup that turned the country into a dictatorship under Mareșal Ion Antonescu. The new regime firmly set the country on a course towards the Axis camp, officially joining the Axis powers on 23 November 1940. As a member of the Axis, Romania joined the invasion of the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941, providing equipment and oil to Nazi Germany as well as committing more troops to the Eastern Front than all the other allies of Germany combined. Romanian forces played a large role during fighting in Ukraine, Bessarabia, Stalingrad and elsewhere. Romanian troops were responsible for the persecution and massacre of up to 260,000 Jews in Romanian-controlled territories, though most Jews living within Romania survived the harsh conditions. According to historian and author Mark Axworthy, the second Axis army in Europe, arguably, belonged to Romania, though, this is disputed since many would agree that this position goes to the Italian army. After the tide of war turned against the Axis, Romania was bombed by the Allies from 1943 onwards and invaded by advancing Soviet armies in 1944. With popular support for Romania's participation in the war faltering and German-Romanian fronts collapsing under the Soviet onslaught, King Michael of Romania led a coup d'état that deposed the Antonescu regime and put Romania on the side of the Allies for the remainder of the war. Despite this late association with the winning side, Greater Romania was largely dismantled, losing territory to Bulgaria and the Soviet Union, but regaining Northern Transylvania from Hungary.

In the 1930s, the Kingdom of Hungary relied on increased trade with Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany to pull itself out of the Great Depression. Hungarian politics and foreign policy had become more stridently nationalistic by 1938, and Hungary adopted an irredentist policy similar to Germany's, attempting to incorporate ethnic Hungarian areas in neighboring countries into Hungary. Hungary benefited territorially from its relationship with the Axis. Settlements were negotiated regarding territorial disputes with the Czechoslovak Republic, the Slovak Republic, and the Kingdom of Romania. In 1940, under pressure from Germany, Hungary joined the Axis powers. The following year, Hungarian forces participated in the invasion of Yugoslavia and the invasion of the Soviet Union. While waging war against the Soviet Union, Hungary engaged in armistice negotiations with the United States and the United Kingdom. Hitler discovered this betrayal, and in March 1944, German forces occupied Hungary. When Soviet forces began threatening Hungary, an armistice was signed between Hungary and the USSR by Regent Miklós Horthy. Soon afterward, Horthy's son was kidnapped by German commandos and Horthy was forced to revoke the armistice. The Regent was then deposed from power, while Hungarian fascist leader Ferenc Szálasi established a new government, with German backing. In 1945, Hungarian and German forces in Hungary were defeated by advancing Soviet armies. Approximately 300,000 Hungarian soldiers and more than 600,000 civilians died during World War II, including among them more than 400,000 Jews and 28,000 Roma. Many cities were damaged, most notably the capital Budapest. Most Jews in Hungary were protected from deportation to German extermination camps for the first few years of the war, although they had for a longer period been subjected to a series of anti-Jewish laws which imposed limits on Jewish participation in Hungary's public and economic life. From the start of the German occupation of Hungary in 1944, Jews and Roma were deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. By the end of the war, the death toll was between 450,000 and 606,000 Hungarian Jews and an estimated 28,000 Hungarian Roma. Hungary's borders were returned to their pre-1938 lines after its surrender.

The Aftermath of World War II: Collaboration & Retribution

08:30
In this video, I look at the aftermath of World War II. The period following the war was defined be questions of retribution for those who collaborated with the Nazis. Why the Luftwaffe failed in World War 2

11:18
Short overview on the major shortcomings and blunders of the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) in World War 2. Taking at look at the initial situation and the various errors committed by its leadership, notably: doctrinal failure by not developing a fleet air arm, insufficient logistics, mismanagement in aircraft production, failure to support its coalition air forces (Finland, Hungary, Romania and Italy) and establishing a proper training system. Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tenminhistory Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=4973164 This episode of Ten Minute History (like a documentary, only shorter) covers Germany from the end of the First World War to the end of the World War 2. The first half deals with the establishment of the Weimar Republic, its wider problems and the rise of the Nazis. The second half covers how the Third Reich was administered and its fall during the Second World War. Twitter: https://twitter.com/Tenminhistory Ten Minute History is a series of short, ten minute animated narrative documentaries that are designed as revision refreshers or simple introductions to a topic. Please note that these are not meant to be comprehensive and there's a lot of stuff I couldn't fit into the episodes that I would have liked to. Thank you for watching, though, it's always appreciated. Also, I said Treblinka wrong, sorry.

Eastern Front (World War II) | Wikipedia audio article

This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Eastern Front (World War II) Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. You can find other Wikipedia audio articles too at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKfABj2eGyjH3ntPxp4YeQ You can upload your own Wikipedia articles through: https://github.com/nodef/wikipedia-tts "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates SUMMARY ======= The Eastern Front of World War II was a theatre of conflict between the European Axis powers and co-belligerent Finland against the Soviet Union (U.S.S.R.), Poland and other Allies, which encompassed Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Northeast Europe (Baltics), and Southeast Europe (Balkans) from 22 June 1941 to 9 May 1945. It has been known as the Great Patriotic War (Russian: ru:Великая Отечественная война, Velikaya Otechestvennaya Voyna) in the former Soviet Union and modern Russia, while in Germany it was called the Eastern Front (German: die Ostfront), or the German-Soviet War by outside parties. The battles on the Eastern Front of the Second World War constituted the largest military confrontation in history. They were characterized by unprecedented ferocity, wholesale destruction, mass deportations, and immense loss of life due to combat, starvation, exposure, disease, and massacres. The Eastern Front, as the site of nearly all extermination camps, death marches, ghettos, and the majority of pogroms, was central to the Holocaust. Of the estimated 70 million deaths attributed to World War II, over 30 million, the majority of them civilian, occurred on the Eastern Front. The Eastern Front was decisive in determining the outcome in the European theatre of operations in World War II, eventually serving as the main reason for the defeat of Nazi Germany and the Axis nations. The two principal belligerent powers were Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, along with their respective allies. Though never engaged in military action in the Eastern Front, the United States and the United Kingdom both provided substantial material aid in the form of the Lend-Lease to the Soviet Union. The joint German–Finnish operations across the northernmost Finnish–Soviet border and in the Murmansk region are considered part of the Eastern Front. In addition, the Soviet–Finnish Continuation War may also be considered the northern flank of the Eastern Front.

The 12-year-old who became a Navy hero in World War II

02:30
Calvin Graham was the youngest of seven children of a poor Texas farm family and because of his abusive stepfather, he and one of his older brothers decided to move out. Calvin supported himself by selling newspapers and delivering telegrams on weekends and after school. He was just eleven when he first thought of lying about his age to join the Navy in World War II. The world was in the midst of the second world war and some of his cousins had recently died in battles. Graham made his decision. The question was how to do it. Graham made it through his recruitment screening and served aboard the USS South Dakota - also known as Battleship X. Soon enough, this 12-year-old boy would become a hero in the Navy for his actions during the Battle of Guadalcanal. The MAIN Reason Why Germany Lost WW2 - OIL

46:36
Oil was in desperately short supply for the Axis powers in WW2. One historian describes it as 'The First War for Oil' - such was the severity of the shortage. Oil was probably the biggest factor that Germany lost world war 2, and it explains many of the previous reasons why the German Wehrmacht fought the way it did. Please see the pinned comment in the comment section for more information, including timestamps, links, additional notes, and the sources/biography I used. Determining the Most Effective Tanks in World War 2 – Discussion of Factors

02:57
Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/mhv Discussions about the most effective tanks in World War 2 often revolve around the armor, gun and usually completely off kill:death ratios. I want to create a framework that allows to determine the overall effectiveness of a tank. Furthermore, the results can be used and compared to the overall strategy, challenges and doctrines of the various factions. Thus, allowing to determine if a tank design was suited for limits and capabilities of that faction. The areas and factors: *Logistical **Reliability **Supply & Fuel Consumption / Efficiency **Maintainability **Strategic Mobility *Technical **Armor/Protection **Tactical Mobility **Lethality / Armament / Firepower / Offensive value **Usability *Industrial **Production Time /Production Cost **Complexity & Suitability for Mass Production **Resource “Drain” Please let me know, what you think of this framework, use the comment section or the associated threads where this video was posted. If you post this video somewhere, please send me a link so that I can follow the discussion there. *Sources, Inspiration & References* https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/regarding-the-t-34.902806/ https://www.reddit.com/r/WarCollege/comments/434l4l/tank_crosscountry_capability_sherman_vs_panther/ http://cloudworth.com/WW2-articles/WWII-tank-production.html http://tankarchives.blogspot.co.uk/2013/11/ergonomics.html http://chris-intel-corner.blogspot.gr/2012/07/wwii-myths-t-34-best-tank-of-war.html
Thailand in World War II | Wikipedia audio article

At the start of the Pacific War, the Japanese Empire pressured the Thai government to allow the passage of Japanese troops to invade British-held Malaya and Burma. The Thai government under Plaek Phibunsongkhram (known simply as Phibun) considered it preferable to co-operate with the Japanese rather than fight them, since Japan promised to help Thailand regain some of the indochinese territories (in today's Laos and Cambodia) which had been lost to France. Axis-aligned Thailand declared war on the United States and Britain and annexed territories in neighbouring countries, expanding to the north, south, and east, gaining a border with China near Kengtung.Thailand retained control of its armed forces and internal affairs. The Japanese policy on Thailand differed from their relationship with the puppet state of Manchukuo. Japan intended bilateral relationships similar to those between Nazi Germany and Finland, Bulgaria, and Romania. However Thailand at that time has been labelled by both the Japanese and the Allies as the "Italy of Asia"Meanwhile, the Thai government had split into two factions, the Phibun regime and a well-organised, pro-Allied resistance movement that eventually numbered around 90,000 Thai guerrillas, supported by government officials allied to the regent Pridi Banomyong. The movement was active from 1942, resisting the Phibun regime and the Japanese. The partisans provided espionage services to the Allies, performed some sabotage activities, and helped engineer Phibun's downfall in 1944. After the war, Thailand received little punishment for its wartime role under Phibun. Thailand suffered about 5,569 military dead during the war, almost entirely due to disease. Deaths in combat included 150 in the Shan States, 180 on December 8, 1941 (the day of both the brief Japanese invasion and the failed British assault on the Ledge), and 100 during the brief Franco-Thai War.

World War 2 Top 10 Bombers (Videos)

18:45
he first strategic bombing efforts took place during World War I (1914–18), by the Russians with their Sikorsky Ilya Muromets bomber (the first heavy four-engine aircraft), and by the Germans using Zeppelins or long-range multi-engine Gotha aircraft. Zeppelins reached England on bombing raids by 1915, forcing the British to create extensive defense systems including some of the first anti-aircraft guns which were often used with searchlights to highlight the enemy machines overhead. Late in the war, American fliers under the command of Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell were developing multi-aircraft "mass" bombing missions behind German lines, although the Armistice ended full realization of what was being planned. Study of strategic bombing continued in the interwar years. Many books and articles predicted a fearful prospect for any future war, paced by political fears such as those expressed by British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin who told the House of Commons early in the 1930s that "the bomber will always get through" no matter what defensive systems were undertaken. It was widely believed by the late 1930s that strategic "terror" bombing of cities in any war would quickly result in devastating losses and might decide a conflict in a matter of days or weeks. But theory far exceeded what most air forces could actually put into the air. Germany focused on short-range tactical bombers. Britain's Royal Air Force began developing four-engine long-range bombers only in the late 1930s. The U.S. Army Air Corps (Army Air Forces as of mid-1941) was severely limited by small budgets in the late 1930s, and only barely saved the B-17 bomber that would soon be vital. The equally important B-24 first flew in 1939. Both aircraft would constitute the bulk of the American bomber force that made the Allied daylight bombing of Nazi Germany possible in 1943–45. At the start of World War II, so-called "strategic" bombing was initially carried out by medium bomber aircraft which were typically twin-engined, armed with several defensive guns, but only possessed limited bomb-carrying capacity and range. Both Britain and the U.S. were developing larger two- and four-engined designs, which began to replace or supplement the smaller aircraft by 1941–42. After American entry into the war, late, in 1941, the U.S. 8th Air Force began to develop a daylight bombing capacity using improved B-17 and B-24 four-engine aircraft. The RAF concentrated its efforts on night bombing. But neither force was able to develop adequate bombsights or tactics to allow for often-bragged "pinpoint" accuracy. The post-war U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey studies supported the overall notion of strategic bombing, but underlined many of its shortcomings as well. Attempts to create pioneering examples of "smart bombs" resulted in the Azon ordnance, deployed in the European Theater and CBI Theater from B-24s. The Boeing B-29 Superfortress is a four-engine propeller-driven heavy bomber designed by Boeing which was flown primarily by the United States during World War II and the Korean War. It was one of the largest aircraft operational during World War II and featured state of the art technology. It was the single most expensive weapons project undertaken by the United States in World War II, exceeding the cost of the Manhattan Project by between 1 and 1.7 billion dollars.[4] Innovations introduced included a pressurized cabin, dual-wheeled, tricycle landing gear, and a remote, computer-controlled fire-control system that directed four machine gun turrets that could be operated by a single gunner and a fire-control officer. A manned tail gun installation was semi-remote. The name "Superfortress" continued the pattern Boeing started with its well-known predecessor, the B-17 Flying Fortress. Designed for the high-altitude strategic bomber role, the B-29 also excelled in low-altitude nighttime incendiary bombing missions. One of the B-29's final roles during World War II was carrying out the atomic bomb attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Forces of the British Middle East Command, including units from the United Kingdom and the colonies of British East Africa, British Somaliland, British West Africa, the Indian Empire, Northern Rhodesia, Nyasaland, Mandatory Palestine, South Africa, Southern Rhodesia and Sudan participated in the campaign. Ethiopian irregulars, the Free French and the Belgian Force Publique also participated. The AOI was defended by Italian forces of the Comando Forze Armate dell'Africa Orientale Italiana (Italian East African Armed Forces Command), with units from the Regio Esercito (Italian army), Regia Aeronautica (air force) and Regia Marina (navy), about 200,000 Regio Corpo Truppe Coloniali from Italian-occupied Abyssinia (Ethiopia), Italian Eritrea and Italian Somaliland, led by Italian officers and NCOs, 70,000 Italian regulars and reservists. The Compagnia Autocarrata Tedesca (German Motorised Company) fought under Italian command. Hostilities began on 13 June 1940, with an Italian air raid on the base of 1 Squadron Southern Rhodesian Air Force (237 (Rhodesia) Squadron RAF) at Wajir in the East Africa Protectorate (Kenya) and continued until Italian forces had been pushed back from Kenya and Sudan, through Somaliland, Eritrea and Ethiopia in 1940 and early 1941. The remnants of the Italian forces in the AOI surrendered after the Battle of Gondar in November 1941, except for small groups that fought a guerrilla war in Ethiopia against the British until the Armistice of Cassibile (3 September 1943) ended hostilities between Italy and the Allies. The East African Campaign was the first Allied strategic victory in the war but was overshadowed by the British defeats in the Battle of Greece and the Battle of Crete.

The post-war expulsion of the Germans formed part of Stalin's plan, in concert with other communist puppets, to expel all Germans from their lands east of the Oder and those lands which from May 1945 fell inside the Soviet occupation zones.Between 1944 and 1948 about 31 million people, including ethnic Germans (Volksdeutsche) as well as German citizens (Reichsdeutsche), were permanently or temporarily moved from Central and Eastern Europe. By 1950, a total of approximately 12 million Germans had fled or were expelled from east-central Europe into Allied-occupied Germany and Austria. The West German government put the total at 14.6 million, including 1 million ethnic Germans settled in territories conquered by Nazi Germany during World War II, ethnic German migrants to Germany after 1950 and the children born to expelled parents. The largest numbers came from preexisting German territories ceded to Poland, the Soviet Union (about 7 million) and from Czechoslovakia (about 3 million). The areas affected included the former eastern territories of Germany, which were annexed by Poland and the Soviet Union after the war, as well as Germans who were living within the prewar borders of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, and the Baltic States. The Nazis had made plans—only partially completed before the Nazi defeat—to remove many Slavic and Jewish people from Eastern Europe and settle the area with Germans. The death toll attributable to the flight and expulsions is disputed, with estimates ranging from 500,000-600,000 and up to 2 to 2.5 million. The removals occurred in three overlapping phases, the first of which was the organized evacuation of eth ...

Top 10 Secret Nazi Weapons: World War 2 Weapons Documentary

06:38
World war 2 weapons and Nazi Weapons Documentary Here we discuss about second world war weapons which were specifically Secret Nazi Weapons Hitler’s most brilliant scientists race to create an arsenal of terrifying new weapons of mass destruction Here is the top 10 most secret weapons of Nazi Germany. Fritz X Considered by many to be the grandfather of the modern smart bomb, the Fritz X was one of Hitler’s most secret bombs. This radio guided glide bomb was intended to use against heavily protected targets such as battleships and heavy cruisers Goliath Tracked Mine Also known as beetle tanks to the Allies, these little remote controlled bombs could clear out bunkers, destroy tanks, and disrupt infantry formations. These small contraptions could carry up to 100kg of high explosives at a top speed of around 6 miles per hour v2 rocket It Was the world’s first long range ballistic missile. The liquid propellant rocket was developed during the Second World War in Germany as a "vengeance weapon", designed to attack Allied cities as retaliation for the Allied bombings against German cities. The V-2 rocket was also the first man-made object to cross the boundary of space. Schwerer Gustav Also known as the great gustav, this is the single largest cannon ever built and used in history, designed by kropp industries. This ultra-heavy railway gun weighed over 1,350 tons and could fire 7 ton shells up to a range of 29 miles. Horton Ho 229 Retrospectively described by many as the world’s first stealth bomber. This was the first pure flying wing plane to be powered by a jet engine, developed by the Horton brothers. This tail less aircraft with fixed wings resembles B-52 stealth bomber made by USA. Sonic Cannon This may sound like the stuff from science fiction, but during the early 1940, Nazi engineers had mange to develop the sonic cannon that could literally shake a person apart from the inside. Landkreuzer P. 1000 Ratte The Landkreuzer P 1000 ratte was a design for a super heavy tank for use by Nazi Germany during World War II. It was designed in 1942 by kropp with the approval of Adolf Hitler but the project was cancelled by Albert Spear in early 1943 and no tank was ever completed. V3 Cannon Was another so called another Nazi vengeance weapon. It was a massive super gun built directly into a hill and capable of firing artillery shells across the English Channel from France to London. Silbervogel Silbervogel, German for silver bird, was a design for a liquid-propellant rocket powered sub-orbital bomber produced by Eugen Sänger and Irene Bredt in the late 1930s for The Third Reich Nazi Germany. It was the equivalent of Modern present day Drones. Sun Gun Although this sounds more like something a movie villain would think up, the Sun Gun was a theoretical orbital weapon that was researched by the Nazis during the war. The concept was first thought up in 1929, by the German physicist Hermann Oberth. He designed a space station from which a 100 meter wide concave mirror would be used to reflect sunlight onto a concentrated point on Earth.

Rules of war (in a nutshell)

04:44
Yes, even wars have laws. To find out more, visit http://therulesofwar.org ******** Rules of War in a Nutshell - script Since the beginning, humans have resorted to violence as a way to settle disagreements. Yet through the ages, people from around the world have tried to limit the brutality of war. It was this humanitarian spirit that led to the First Geneva Convention of 1864,and to the birth of modern International Humanitarian Law. Setting the basic limits on how wars can be fought, these universal laws of war protect those not fighting, as well as those no longer able to. To do this, a distinction must always be made between who or what may be attacked, and who or what must be spared and protected. - CIVILIANS - Most importantly, civilians can never be targeted. To do so is a war crime. “When they drove into our village, they shouted that they were going to kill everyone. I was so scared, I ran to hide in the bush. I heard my mother screaming. I thought I would never see her again.” Every possible care must be taken to avoid harming civilians or destroying things essential for their survival. They have a right to receive the help they need. - DETAINEES - “The conditions prisoners lived in never used to bother me. People like him were the reason my brother was dead. He was the enemy and was nothing to me. But then I realized that behind bars, he was out of action and no longer a threat to me or my family.” The laws of war prohibit torture and other ill-treatment of detainees, whatever their past. They must be given food and water and allowed to communicate with loved ones. This preserves their dignity and keeps them alive. - SICK & WOUNDED - Medical workers save lives, sometimes in the most dangerous conditions. “Several fighters from both sides had been critically wounded in a fierce battle and we were taking them to the closest hospital. At a checkpoint, a soldier threatened us, demanding that we only treat his men. Time was running out and I was afraid they were all going to die.” Medical workers must always be allowed to do their job and the Red Cross or Red Crescent must not be attacked. The sick or wounded have a right to be cared for, regardless of whose side they are on. - LIMITS TO WARFARE - Advances in weapons technology has meant that the rules of war have also had to adapt. Because some weapons and methods of warfare don't distinguish between fighters and civilians, limits on their use have been agreed. In the future, wars may be fought with fully autonomous robots. But will such robots ever have the ability to distinguish between a military target and someone who must never be attacked? No matter how sophisticated weapons become it is essential that they are in line with the rules of war. International Humanitarian Law is all about making choices that preserve a minimum of human dignity in times of war, and makes sure that living together again is possible once the last bullet has been shot.

10 Daring Raids of World War II

16:35
World War Two was fought on a colossal scale. Battles could last for months and involve millions of combatants. Major gains were rarely made without a vast expenditure of manpower and resources. However, there were rare occasions where a few men accomplished extraordinary things. With the advantage of surprise, preparation, and no small amount of luck, it was possible for a small force to inflict damage out of all proportion to its size. →Subscribe for new videos every day! https://www.youtube.com/user/toptenznet?sub_confirmation=1 Find more lists at: http://www.toptenz.net Entertaining and educational top 10 lists from TopTenzNet! Canada in World War 2

Grade 10 History project *I own nothing* music is 'Shattered' by Trading Yesterday Pictures and facts from various resources: http://www.canadahistory.com/sections/war/WW%20II/Mobilization.html http://www.canadaatwar.ca/page52.html http://www.canadaatwar.ca/world-war-ii/ http://www.canadaatwar.ca/content-89/world-war-ii/timeline/ http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/articles/second-world-war-wwii https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HyryiMk9w4M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q78COTwT7nE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viK9--wKuyE http://www.junobeach.org/main.html http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/world_war_two_1939.htm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqMlo51U_KQ http://www.howto.gov/social-media/video/create-your-storyboard http://www.1914-1918.net/died.htm http://facts.randomhistory.com/world-war-ii-facts.html http://www.warmuseum.ca/cwm/exhibitions/chrono/1914vimy_e.shtml http://www.cobwfa.ca/images/CEF_e.pdf http://legionmagazine.com/en/index.php/2011/07/slaughter-on-the-somme/ http://www.warmuseum.ca/cwm/exhibitions/chrono/1931goes_to_e.shtml The video is entitled A Look at Canada in World War II because the topic that was chosen to focus on was Canada in World War II. The music that was chosen to accompany the images and information presented in this video is 'Shattered' by Trading Yesterday. This music was chosen to go along with the information because this particular song has a particular feeling to it that makes it feel almost eerie and gives you shivers. Since the war was eerie and the facts about it give you shivers, I thought that this was a perfect match. 'Shattered' also changes tones and feelings throughout it, for example it begins fairly quiet, as the Phoney war was happening, but as the larger battles occurred, the music becomes louder and faster and has more meaning. Some of the lyrics perfectly relate to the war, such as when The United States dropped the atomic bombs onto Japan after Germany had surrendered and Victory had already come in Europe. This song also talks a lot about death, and in the war, millions of soldiers died. The first part of the video (37 seconds) is dedicated to the beginning of the war; declaration, mobilization, and the Phoney war. The next part (24 seconds) is showing what Hitler and the Nazi's accomplished at the beginning of the war. The following part (8 seconds) is the planning stages of Operation Overlord. Following the plans of Operation Overlord comes the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbour and other places (38 seconds). Next comes the Dieppe Raid (15 seconds). Following Dieppe is the Final Solution of the Holocaust (6 seconds). After the Final Solution is the Italian Campaign and the Sicily attacks (12 seconds). Next comes D-Day and Juno Beach (22 seconds). Finally, the Germans surrender and Victory in Europe is brought (17 seconds). The following 35 seconds are images from various points during the war, represent the roles of females, and what the soldiers went through to get to the war. After these images come the new Atomic Age, and when the United States drop two atomic bombs on Japan, which leads to Victory in Japan and Japan surrendering (17 seconds). To end the video (24 seconds) some facts about the total number of soldiers, deaths, and more specifically Canadian soldiers are shown, and the finale of the show is a flag and a short statement allowing for time to reflect upon the war. This video shows what I had expected it to in many ways. Firstly, it is very visually appealing. The photographs and videos that were used are very clear and Canadian. In addition, the music portrays a connection between the visual representations and the facts. Many parts of the song relate exactly to what happened in the war. This project went from a very rough drawing of a storyboard to a beautiful video showing Canada during World War II. If this video were to be entirely redone, from beginning to end, I would lengthen how long the facts appear on the screen, and also would time the changing of the slides to match better with the music.

Women Fill Men's Factory Jobs During World War II

04:52
While women worked in a variety of positions previously closed to them, the aviation industry saw the greatest increase in female workers. More than 310,000 women worked in the U.S. aircraft industry in 1943, representing 65 percent of the industry’s total workforce (compared to just 1 percent in the pre-war years). The munitions industry also heavily recruited women workers, as represented by the U.S. government’s “Rosie the Riveter” propaganda campaign. Based in small part on a real-life munitions worker, but primarily a fictitious character, the strong, bandanna-clad Rosie became one of the most successful recruitment tools in American history, and the most iconic image of working women during World War II. In movies, newspapers, posters, photographs, articles and even a Norman Rockwell-painted Saturday Evening Post cover, the Rosie the Riveter campaign stressed the patriotic need for women to enter the work force—and they did, in huge numbers. Though women were crucial to the war effort, their pay continued to lag far behind their male counterparts: Female workers rarely earned more than 50 percent of male wages.
