Effectively creating a high-performing HR system involves evaluating the system. Is the HR system in place helping the company achieve its strategic objectives? Although there are a variety of ways to evaluate HR systems, one approach that has gained tremendous popularity is to build an HR scorecard. An HR scorecard helps assess the degree to which the links within HR systems and the contributions employees make to their firms actually help them realize a competitive advantage. To create an HR scorecard, you need to take the following steps: Identify your firm’s strategic performance drivers. Evaluate your firm’s external alignment. Strategic performance drivers are the activities that enable a company to realize the potential of its source of competitive advantages. Companies pursuing a low-cost leadership strategy, for example, rely on operational excellence and cost controls to attain or maintain their position of cost leadership. Some key strategic performance drivers might be improved operational efficiency, reduced overhead, and increased productivity. HR deliverables are what is needed from a firm’s HR activities, or the mechanism by which an HR system creates value for a company. Consider the strategic performance driver high-quality customer service. To realize high levels of customer service, companies need to attract and retain talented employees who are able to build and sustain long-term relationships with customers. As a result, the HR deliverables for the strategic driver high-quality customer service might be employment stability and high-quality employees. Similarly, consider the strategic performance driver increasing new product offerings. What types of HR deliverables would be needed for this driver? Employee collaboration and creativity could be the HR deliverables that would enable companies to realize a strategic performance driver of new products. The third step in creating an HR scorecard is to evaluate the degree of alignment between the firm’s HR practices and its HR deliverables as well as to evaluate the degree of alignment among the various HR practices themselves. One of the key objectives of the third step of the HR system evaluation process is to determine whether the practices you are using for your primary HR activities (work design and workforce planning, managing employee competencies, and managing employee attitudes and behaviors) are helping or hurting the achievement of your firm’s HR deliverables. This type of evaluation is easy to conduct. It is important to evaluate the alignment among a firm’s HR practices themselves. As we have discussed, it is possible that the failure to achieve a firm’s HR deliverables is due to negative synergies, or “deadly combinations,” among the company’s HR practices.

My name is Emma, and in today’s video, we are going to teach you 10 verbs that you can use when you’re talking about work and jobs—okay?—and careers. So these are 10 very important verbs that you will hear a lot in movies, and on TV shows, and maybe even your professional life. Okay? So, let’s get started. So, for each of these verbs, I’m going to tell you what they mean; I’m going to tell you the grammar of the verb, because that’s also very important; and I am going to talk about pronunciation, so: “How do we say it?”; and spelling. Each of these parts, so meaning, grammar, pronunciation, and smell… Spelling; not smelling. Spelling can really help you remember these verbs better. Okay? So, my first verb: “to be hired”. What does it mean: “to be hired”? Well, this is a very good meaning; this is something very exciting. When you are hired, it means you get a job. Okay? So, it’s: You’ve given your resume to a company, you’ve done the interview, and guess what? You are hired. Okay? That means: “You’ve gotten the job! Well done.” So, I’ve drawn a smiley face here, because this is very exciting. So, let’s look at an example of the verb “hired”. A long time ago, when I was a lot younger: “I was hired by Blockbuster.” Okay? So, a company, I don’t know if it still exists, but: “I was hired by Blockbuster.” Okay? So you’ll notice something about this verb. We have here the subject, which is “I” – “Emma”, and we have the verb “hired”, but you might also notice this word “was”. “I was hired”. This means that this verb is in what’s called the passive tense. Okay? So, when we’re talking about maybe our friends or our family, or people we know who got a job, we will say: “My friend was hired by”, and the company. Or, you know: “I was hired by this company.” Okay? Now, this is a bit different. So this is in the passive and it’s very important to remember the word “was”. We have here our… Our same verb: “hired”, but in this case it’s in the active tense. And if you don’t know what I mean by passive or active, that’s okay, because we have a video on that which will help explain that; but the point here is that: Usually when you use “hired”, you usually have a “was” in front of it or a “were”, depending on if you’re saying: “he”, “she”, “we”, “they”. We usually have it like this. If you’re talking about a company or the boss of a company—a manager—and we’re talking about their role and that they want to employ someone, in this case we would use the active, which is this sentence: “The manager hired John.” Okay? And so you’ll notice here… I could also say: “Blockbuster hired me.” You know, if I was a famous actress, I could say: “Universal Studios hired me for their next movie.” Not true, but just an example. So, the key here is there’s no “was” or “were” in the active form. But for you, you will probably be mainly using the first form – the passive form. Okay? And if you have questions about this, you can watch our videos on passive and active tenses. So: “I was hired by Blockbuster.” How do I pronounce this word? Well, the first thing is: It is two syllables. So, we say: “hi-er”. Okay? So I want you to repeat after me: “hi-er”. Okay. And so it’s kind of like the word: “hi”, “er”. And in terms of the spelling… One of the great things with verbs that have to do with jobs is a lot of them are spelt very similarly; they have very close spellings. So, for example, we have here: “hire”. There’s another job verb that we’ll be talking about soon that does not mean the same thing, but it also has “ire”. Can you guess what that word is? “Fire”. Okay? “Fire” rhymes with “hire”; they both have similar spelling… Spellings. And we also have another word: “retire”. Okay? So, “i-r-e” you’ll see are very common with job verbs. All right, so let’s look at another verb: “to earn”. Okay? This is a great verb: “to earn”. It means to make money. Okay? So you’ve gotten the job, you have been hired, so what happens now? The best part: You start to make money. You earn money. Okay? So, I’ve drawn a happy face here because this is also a very good thing about jobs. […]

Dr. Chirag Sethi, Founder and Managing Director of Classic Fitness Academy, tells about the job and career scope in Indian Fitness Industry. People have a notion that there are no jobs in Indian Fitness Industry and there is no earning potential when you decide to make a career in it. Dr. Chirag Sethi throws light on this subject and clears the cobwebs of prejudices regarding this industry by letting people know about what all you can do as a part of the Fitness Industry and he also tells that there is a lot of earning potential. He gave examples of young individuals of 22 or 23 years of age earning lacs of rupees every month! But all of this starts only when you start right in this industry and that is by studying and gaining a certificate from a reputed fitness academy. He informed that as you graduate with a fitness course and earn a certificate, you can work in this industry as a Fitness or Floor Trainer, Personal Trainer or Group Ex Trainer; depending upon the type of certification you have done. After a Floor Trainer you can become a Personal Trainer which is a level up. A Floor Trainer does an 8 hours shift and is hired against monthly salary by gyms and fitness studios/clubs. The salary ranges from 12k to 20k per month. A Personal Trainer is generally hired on freelance basis where he is paid a commission of 30% to 50% out of the fee paid by the client and rest of it is shared by the gym/fitness club. There is no limit to what a good Personal Trainer can earn, he claims that you can earn in lacs per month as he knows a young Personal Trainer of only 22 years of age who is already getting 1 lac a month. A Personal Trainer enjoys this status as his job is to guide his client on every step of his fitness journey, standing on his/her head in all the workouts. When you step up further you can be a Gym Manager or Fitness Club Manager who is responsible for sales, equipment and all the concerned departments of a gym. Again these managers have a potential of earning in lacs per month. A step further comes Franchise Manager, who again has to be a person who has an experience in the industry and can smoothly run the gym franchise business on the basis of that. He gave an example of one of such managers who is hired by a club in China is earning $4000 per month which is close to INR 3 lacs in India at an age of 23! So, he breaks the myth of no jobs or low income jobs in this industry. Fitness Industry has got a great scope in terms of jobs and career, which is expanding day by day because of the rise in lifestyle related illnesses like Diabetes, Hypertension and Obesity among Indian population these and for that matter in the world. Due to the advent of fitness apps, digitalization of fitness information and gadgets, the innovative job avenues in fitness have come up which will rise with time. Fitness industry in itself is expanding exponentially and no expansion is done without employment of human resource. In this stellar presentation I will be shining a light on which degrees you should ACTUALLY consider spending your hard earned time and money on and which ones you should avoid like wet floors Enjoy :) So this is obviously a hugely controversial topic that is raging in our society today. In one camp you have the Pro College side that basically thinks that going to college is the key to success and everyone should do it if they want to be successful. In the other camp (very common here on youtube), you have the side that thinks college is a giant scam and we're all falling for it. Which side is right? That is the big question and as with all big questions the answer is.... "it depends" Neither side is objectively right or wrong Everyone's situation is different and you should make the decision on whether or not to go to college based on your unique situation Now in MOST situations, you should NOT go to college if you're passionate about a field where there's not much money. You would be way better off just working in the field, maybe spend your time becoming an influencer in that field or something like that. That experience would be WAY better for you. Either that or just keep it at a passion and don't go into that field at all I'll give you an example of a passion of mine that i've kept as a hobby: History. I absolutely love history. Reading about ancient Rome, Genghis Khan, and even as far back as how life evolved in Africa is incredible fascinating to me. I absolutely love reading about these things but I probably wouldn't make any money if I got a history degree. A much better idea would be for me to start a youtube channel about history. Four years of doing that wouldn't cost much, I'd learn a lot and I guarantee that four years of doing that would make you damn good at it. Compare that to 4 years of going to college and then you finally get a degree and you've forgotten most of what you learned. You're also probably $40k in debt and can't find a job Its a no brainer. Now that we've established that lets talk about degrees that are actually worth it. The thing is, anything worth building takes TIME, rarely do people ever become overnight successes and even when it does happen you end up finding out later on that they worked for YEARS learning how to perfect their craft before they "blew up overnight" Years of working in the dark with no pay, no recognition and no influence Just grinding away and mastering their craft Then they "blew up", if they hadn't spent all of that time they never would have blown up This is why I really think the safe bet is to get a safe, stable career and then use that as stable ground to launch off of. Have stability and then chase your passion on the side. It will probably take years to take off so you will need that stability in order to launch Now when it comes to picking the right industry/career/job etc to go into there are some important things you need to look at Pay: This one is obvious, if everyone is making $30k a year its obvious that society doesn't value the job enough to pay well. Whether this is right or wrong (teachers being an example, they should definitely be paid more), it is what it is and you need to recognize and accept this. Choose a field that pays at least (on average) $60k+ a year, preferably $80k a year. This does vary depending on how expensive the place you live is of course Job Satisfaction Ratings: This one is so important. I see SO MANY people wanting to become doctors, its crazy. I tell them to look into the job satisfaction rating for MDs and its HORRIBLE. MDs are depressed and miserable with their jobs to the point where many switch careers or even end it... Very sad to see. Even though they're making really good money, they get a lot of respect from people in society etc etc it's just crazy and the reason for this is all of the red tape and regulations as well as the huge amount of pressure working those long hours in the stressed environment. Everyone seems to be completely unaware of this and they want to be doctors for some reason and it blows my mind. There are better careers in the medical field to get into in my opinion that have all of the perks without the downsides but thats a topic for another video Demand: A general rule of thumb is to not go into a field that's dying or has no demand. This is just a recipe for disaster. You will be fighting other people for job openings, won't be able to find a good job in a desirable location, will have to accept lower pay, worse benefits, being treated badly because they could easily replace you, etc etc etc... It's just not a good move to make If you take these 4 things into account when choosing the career you want to go into you will make a solid decision and set yourself up to become rich, retire, travel, chase your dreams and live a fulfilling life. Performance management and employee satisfaction are two areas that pose challenges for employers. Using performance management methods such as appraisals to measure employee performance comes with its own challenges, which are usually unforeseen. Only after employers implement complex appraisal programs do they realize the problems associated with them. Job satisfaction is another subjective topic that concerns employers – job satisfaction, or lack thereof, can affect performance appraisals and threaten the employer-employee relationship by creating friction between employees and their supervisors. Nevertheless, employers can use surveys, employee feedback and supervisor review to define what problems exist within both job satisfaction and performance appraisals. 1. Conduct an employee opinion survey with questions about job satisfaction and performance appraisals. Examples of questions that probe employee job satisfaction might include “on a scale of one to five, describe your enthusiasm about beginning the work week” and “how many times in the past six months have you had an unscheduled absence from work simply because you didn’t want to be here?” To identify and define problems with performance appraisals, ask employees how many times they have received timely reviews from their supervisors. Granted, these may be awkward questions for some employees; however, they shed light on the level of employee morale, which is a strong indicator of job satisfaction. Provide employees with a guarantee that their survey responses are confidential and anonymous. 2. Facilitate employee focus groups for issues related to job satisfaction and performance appraisals. To ensure both confidentiality and anonymity, engage the services of a workplace consultant to ask employees questions about their working conditions and ideas for improvement. If you have a casual workplace where employees feel free to share their concerns, you may not need to expend time and money for a consultant. It depends on your workplace climate. Some employees are reluctant to give feedback in an open forum for fear of retribution. 3. Identify issues with performance appraisals in terms of being timely and complete. Employees who receive their performance reviews long after the deadline may raise their concerns with human resources when reviews and ratings are tied to merit increases. Another way to define problems with performance appraisals pertains to looking at accuracy within the review itself. Supervisors and managers receive leadership training performance management philosophy and how to conduct the actual performance review meeting. However, supervisor bias is an issue in many appraisals. Supervisor bias introduces errors and prevents supervisors from rating employees objectively. Types of supervisor bias include regency error wherein employees are given ratings on a shorter evaluation period than required. Supervisors who commit regency error tend to only look at the employee’s performance during the month or so prior to an annual performance review rather than the entire one-year evaluation period. 4. Review exit interview responses from employees who voluntarily resigned their positions. Examine their answers, looking for clues that indicate poor job satisfaction was the reason for ending the employment relationship. Examples of reasons related to job performance and performance appraisals may indicate dissatisfaction with leadership. Addressing ineffective leadership may resolve employee complaints related to their performance evaluations, including supervisor bias, failure to conduct appraisals in a timely manner and rendering incomplete or inaccurate appraisals of employee performance. Some 37% of workers believe their jobs are pointless, and if we include the jobs that exist to serve those pointless jobs in some way, it's possible that half of the jobs in our economy today (mostly residing in the informational sectors of white-collar work) could disappear with no ill-consequences. What are the structures? 1:19:55 Bringing it all home; policies to support; what we can do Daniel: "Bullshit jobs," coined by anthropologist David Graeber, are jobs that just don't need to exist. Many employees working for a boss or for an organization genuinely believe the work they're doing is pointless, that they have to pretend to work even though there's no work to be done, and that if their job or even their entire industry were to disappear completely, society wouldn't miss it. In fact we might even be better off. This has extraordinary implications for the human psyche, our emotional well-being, and the economics of our society. The definition of a bullshit job can't come necessarily from the outside, because we're talking about subjective values. The best way to evaluate whether a job is bullshit is from the employee's perspective. Who's better to tell you the job is worthless than the person actually doing it? And if you get a whole group of people who are saying that about a host of similar jobs you might infer that the whole industry is bullshit. As an employee, you might look at what you're doing, realize it's pointless and you have to pretend a lot of times that what you're doing is meaningful because, if not, you might be fired or you might be judged by your co-workers or broader society. To help conceptualize this Graeber lays out five broad categories of bullshit jobs. David: The five categories of bullshit jobs according to David Graeber, based on people who are self-defining their work as bullshit: Number one are what he calls flunkies, people whose whole purpose more or less is to make somebody feel more important. This could be the assistant or somebody who sits at a desk just to make things look more official. Second category: goons. Daniel: Like a criminal organization competing with another one, needing all these goons to protect from the other guy's goons. Companies do the same thing. David: Like lawyers attacking other teams of lawyers in some lawsuit that has little to nothing to do with the real world, just machinations in business deals of the companies. Third: duct tapers, people who fix things that should have never have broken in the first place, like a device built cutting corners. These jobs exist solely to fix the mistakes of others in these large companies who made mistakes because they're making things as cheap as possible. Daniel: These can proliferate and cascade upon one another: if a company hires a team of goons to compete with another company's goons but then those goons themselves, because they're not there to do a particular task well but just serve in a superfluous role, might make mistakes that the company has to hire somebody to clean up. David: Fourth: box-tickers, people who check those boxes on a piece of paper and pass the form on, but aren't really doing anything except being a cog in the machine of endless paper trails and processes that ostensibly streamline our interactions, but really just make it byzantine and impossible to figure anything out. Daniel: Often box-tickers exist to prove that something is being done even though in the real world it's not. David: The last category are the most reviled—taskmasters. Middle management, bosses who aren’t actually helping get any work done. They just exist because we assume a hierarchical structure is the way things have to be. Daniel: In the public and political consciousness, we hold jobs as an irrefutable good. We never question if we need these jobs in the first place; it's assumed that if people are employed, all is good. A Universal Basic Income (UBI) would decouple the need for a livelihood from that of work, reframing our values from wealth creation and jobs for the sake of jobs, to instead ask what kind of people we want around, how should a human act, what should a good neighbor look like?

Anyone who is seriously considering making a job commitment to an employer will have many questions. If they don’t, then they are not serious about the job or are desperate and willing to take anything. You should have a handful of questions already planned out before your interview. You want to ask questions that will help you qualify this company as a place you want to work.
