HR Basics: Human Resource Planning

07:33
HR Basics is a series of short courses, designed to highlight what you need to know about a particular human resource management topic. In today’s HR Basics, we explore human resource planning by outlining a three-step strategic process to meet your organization’s human resource needs. Human resource planning is a process that identifies current and future human resources needs for an organization to achieve its goals. Human resource planning should serve as a link between human resource management and the overall strategic plan of an organization. The goals of human resource planning are to ultimately improve organizational outcomes. Human resource planning is used in and for all functional areas of human resource management. Although you might immediately think of workforce planning, human resource planning covers the brood spectrum of functional areas of human resource management. Human resource planning includes figuring out where you are, where you want to go, and how to get there. Using this process, you will develop the core elements of a human resource plan - strategy, goals, and actions. Strategy is an extension of an organization's mission, a bridge between the organization and it’s environment. Goals are a statement of desired outcomes toward which effort is directed, to realize your human resource plan. Actions are the most important things that can be done to reach stated goals. Planning is critical for each functional area of human resource management. Ask these three simple strategic questions – where are we now, where do we want to be, and how can we get there? - to frame your next human resource planning process. Doing so will ensure you develop the right human resource strategy, goals and action items to realize your plan.

Training Human Resources

38:10
Training represents a significant expenditure for most employers. However, it has historically been viewed tactically rather than strategically, which means that training is seen as a short-term activity rather than one that has longer-term effects on organizational success. Training is the development and delivery of information people will use in their jobs. To be a strategic investment, training must align with company goals and contribute to the achievement of key performance indicators. In other words, it must produce positive results. Without ongoing training, organizations may not have staff members with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) needed to compete effectively. Building the capacity for all employees to work smoothly with diverse individuals is essential to competitive success. Certain legal compliance considerations will ensure the effectiveness of your training and development initiatives. Accurate recordkeeping related to required training is important to demonstrate that the company is meeting its obligations. Orientation, which is the planned introduction of new employees to their jobs, coworkers, and the organization, is offered by most employers. Successfully integrating new hires is important, and measuring the degree of success allows the orientation program to be managed well. The way in which a firm plans, organizes, and structures its training affects the way employees experience the training, which in turn influences the effectiveness of the training. While there are five distinct phases to the ISD process, in most cases, the phases overlap. Although the process appears to be linear, it is actually iterative. It is common to recycle back to an earlier phase when information is uncovered at later stages. Ideally, management looks at training needs in relation to strategic plans and as part of the organizational change process. Then training needs can be prioritized on the basis of objectives. Conducting the training most needed to improve organizational performance will produce visible results more quickly. Training design is all about creating content that meets your audience’s learning and development needs. Learner readiness means that individuals have the ability to learn, have the motivation to learn, have high confidence, see value in learning, and have a learning style that fits the training. The success of training efforts depends on understanding and adapting training to the needs of the learner. Practice, feedback, overlearning, behavioral modeling, error-based examples, and reinforcement are strategies that are frequently used when designing a training experience. Closely related is an instructional strategy called immediate confirmation, which is based on the idea that people learn best if they receive reinforcement and feedback as soon as possible after exhibiting a response. Immediate confirmation corrects errors that, if made and not corrected throughout the training, might establish an undesirable pattern that would need to be unlearned. It also aids with the transfer of training to the job. Internal training generally addresses topics specific to the organization and its jobs. Effective internal training programs have the potential to be good for both employer and employee. External training, or training that takes place outside the organization, is used extensively by organizations of all sizes. Whether training is delivered internally or externally, appropriate training must be chosen. E-learning is the use of web-based technology to conduct training online. Training results can be examined through cost–benefit analysis, which compares costs and benefits associated with training. Training evaluation is the process by which you can determine if you have met those objectives and whether there is a better and cheaper way in which to do so in the future. Organizations invest billions of dollars and countless hours in training employees. These investments should support the goals of the organization and result in benefits to both the employees and the company. Thoughtful design, delivery, and evaluation of training offer the greatest probability of achieving success.

5 Steps To Successful Workforce Planning

06:59
https://blog.hr360.com/5-steps-to-successful-workforce-planning-video-blog Video Highlights: 00:42 Workforce planning is anticipating your organization’s future staffing needs, and identifying the steps needed to build that ideal workforce. Whether you’re expanding, maintaining, or downsizing, a workforce plan is an essential blueprint for managing the direction of your company. 00:59 Your first task is to gather market data. Learning about the national and local job markets—and the factors that influence them—will help you form your workforce plan. 02:03 Political and legislative trends also play their parts. Changes in federal, state, or local laws may have a positive or negative effect on your industry, your hiring ability, or the kinds of benefits you’re able to offer your employees. 02:57 After getting up to speed on market conditions and trends, Step 2 is analyzing your specific organization. Begin by gathering and examining information about your existing workforce, starting with a review of current positions. 03:43 After examining your workforce, develop basic supply and demand information in Step 3. Begin with demand, including employees who are planning to retire and your turnover rate. 04:29 Now you’re ready for Step Four, which is to develop your implementation plan, drawing on the information and analyses you have conducted up to this point. 05:06 Workforce planning is an ongoing endeavor, which brings us to Step 5: reviewing your plan annually to accommodate growth and change. 05:36 In closing, let’s have a word about cost-per-hire formulas, which take into account the expenses associated with attracting and securing new talent, and can be a useful tool in your workforce planning.

According to astrologer Dr. Athena Perrakis, Aries have more stamina than any other sign, and when they have a goal, they go at it at full force. They don't give up until they've accomplished their goal. Dr. Perrakis also states that aries tend to start businesses and sit in high level positions. She says that good career options for someone who is an aries include ownership or managerial positions. Aries tend to question authority, which is why they would excel in these types of positions. Another great career path for an Aries is a position in Human Resources. This is because an Aries is a people person. They are intuitive and can often accurately assess someone's character. They are driven, ambitious, and very instinctual. Taurus – Bulls love beauty and stability, making them ripe for jobs that have built in benefits. She states that Tauruses are conservative, shrewd, and intuitive. They don't waste money and are great with keeping their finances in order. No wonder Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's founder and one of the richest people on earth is a taurus! So if you're a taurus, consider a career in finance, business, or banking. And according to Dr. Perrakis, Geminis are extremely intelligent. They can understand complex ideas and solve very challenging and complicated problems. This is why geminis would make great translators, professors, or teachers. They are eloquent with their words and would also make great public speakers. And because geminis are so eloquent with their words, they would be great politicians or debators. No wonder Anderson Cooper - one of the most famous correspondents and news analysts of modern time, is a gemini! Cancer – These astrological mother's excel at jobs where they nurture children, and work very well in positions where they are taking care of others. Cancers are also notorious for being emotional. How to : Answering human resource job interview questions

12:18
Answering human resource job interview questions Searching for a job can be a full time job in itself. Networking, scouring the help wanted ads, and filling out applications can sometimes seem like more effort than it's worth, especially when contemplating how to answer interview questions. But don't give up -- you never know when you'll get a call from the human resources department of a wonderful company asking to schedule a face-to-face interview. When that call does come, you can delight in the idea that you are only one step away from your dream job. So shine your shoes and start giving some thought to the best way to answer the interviewer's questions! Here are a few job interview tips to learn how to answer human resource job interview questions: Be honest. You are giving the interviewer their very first impression of you. Be sure that you present yourself as honest, trustworthy, and forthcoming when answering questions. Display a positive attitude. Everyone prefers to work with upbeat people; no matter what the questions are, try to answer them in an optimistic, upbeat and enthusiastic way. Highlight your skills and abilities at every opportunity. If you have previously worked in the same job field, emphasize your advancements and achievements. If you haven’t, be sure to relate the skills you do have to the job for which you are applying. Give examples of any successes you may have had at other jobs that might be similar. Point out your education and training if it is applicable. If you have attended conferences, seminars or other job-related professional development or training sessions, be sure to mention what you have gained from those experiences. Give credit to others when appropriate. If your last employer or manager was a great motivator or made the work environment comfortable and productive, mention it. Speaking well of others can reflect well on you during an process. Never point out the shortcomings of others. Avoid talking about any personal issues you may have had with past employment situations, managers, bosses, or coworkers when being asked interview questions, because the interviewer will assume that you may have these same issues with coworkers or managers at a new company over time. Highlight particular life events that have given you skills that might apply to this position. For example, volunteering in the past may have increased your ability to communicate well with a variety of people and/or developed your time management skills. This can apply likewise even to those who have extensive job experience. Be open and friendly, but not too chatty! Directly answer the questions, but do so in a calm, friendly and complete manner. Prepare ahead and ask questions. Most interviewers will ask if you have any questions for them, so it is best to prepare these ahead of time as best you can. Ask what type of potential growth or advancement exists for the person who will be hired. You can even ask why the prior employee, if there was one, left the position. These types of questions let the interviewer know that you are interested. Present yourself as though you've done your homework about the company's history (You have, haven't you?!) and that you hope to play a part in its continued growth and success. Focus the interview on what you can offer the company, not on your limitations. You may have limitations as to what you can offer the new company. These are best avoided during the interview. For example, it is best to avoid a discussion about needing to leave the office promptly at 5:00 every day due to your daycare situation. Wait until you are actually offered the job before bringing these types of issues up. Your initial interview is not the time to approach these types of subjects! The Mission, Vision, and Values statements

05:58
A great way to formalize a company’s purposes, goals, and values is to have formal mission, vision, and values statements. The Mission statement addresses the question “Why do we exist?” or “What is the fundamental reason for our organization’s existence?” The Vision statement describes the desired future position of the company and answers the questions “What do we want to achieve in the future?” and “Who do we want to become?” A company's values are the guiding principles for the way it expects its employees to behave. Download our FREE cover letter samples: https://www.workitdaily.com/cover-letter-samples/ With the way the hiring process is these days, recruiters are flooded with thousands of cover letters. Trying to sift through them all can be a daunting process. On top of this, most cover letters are generic and tell the recruiter nothing about you. But there are a couple of things recruiters really CAN'T STAND when it comes to cover letters. Career expert and Work It Daily founder J.T. O'Donnell is going to share what those things are and why you should stop doing them NOW... #1: To Whom It May Concern Using the phrase comes off as old-fashioned, impersonal, and shows that you didn't do your homework on the company. Instead use "Dear Hiring Team", "Dear Hiring Manager" or better yet find the name of the person who posted the job. # 2: Recap of your resume. Writing out your accomplishment and rehashing what's already in your resume is wasting the recruiters time. Also, you could list the wrong thing in your cover letter could make them decide you're not a good fit and they won't even look at your resume. Instead, you need a disruptive cover letter. How To Answer Any Behavioral Interview Question

06:16
Work It Daily's Free Job Search Resource: https://www.workitdaily.com/why-shut-out-hiring-process-youtube/ 8 Smart Questions To Ask Hiring Managers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y95eI-ek_E8 Don't get STUMPED by tricky interview questions! Instead, learn how to answer them effectively. In this video, career expert J.T. O'Donnell reveals her SECRET to answering behavior interview questions so you can crush your job interviews every time. A behavioral interview questions is an open-ended questions, meaning it doesn't result in a one-word answer like “yes” or “no.” Instead, it requires the interviewee to elaborate and give a more personalized answer. Hiring managers use behavioral interview questions to help determine if candidates have the skills or experience to do the job. The best way to answer these types of questions is to structure your answers using the Experience, Learn, and Grow model. Experience + Learn = Grow. - Explain your experience. Share a situation you dealt with in the past. What was the problem or challenge that had to be overcome? - Talk about how you overcame it and how you accomplished it. - Explain how you’re going to take this lesson and use it to keep growing as professional so you can add even more value in similar situations in the future. Here are some common behavioral interview questions you could get asked in your next interview: - What's your greatest accomplishment on the job? - Tell me about a difficult situation you encountered and how you overcame it. - If I was to ask a co-worker about you, how would they describe you on-the-job? - If someone came to you with an enthusiastic, yet unrealistic request, how would you handle it? Take these three questions and start practicing structuring your answers using the Experience, Learn, and Grow method. __________________________________ If you’re having a hard time even getting interviews, check out our free resource that could help address some issues that could be holding you back. https://www.workitdaily.com/why-shut-out-hiring-process-youtube/ And, if you want J.T. and her team to help you become a pro at interviewing, negotiating and more, then you need to check out our Premium Subscription: https://www.workitdaily.com/pricing/ Follow Work It Daily: https://www.workitdaily.com/ https://twitter.com/workitdaily?lang=en https://www.facebook.com/groups/WorkItDaily https://www.facebook.com/WorkItDaily/ #Interview #InterviewTips #JobSearch

When an Employee Gives Two Weeks’ Notice

04:10
http://blog.hr360.com/when-an-employee-gives-two-weeks-notice Video Highlights: 00:52 Make sure you comply with the law. Most states have adopted the “employment-at-will” doctrine, which generally allows you to discharge an employee for any reason, or no reason at all, at any time and without advance notice. 01:25 Look carefully at your employee handbook: Courts have ruled that handbooks that do not have a proper employment-at-will disclaimer may lead employees to reasonably expect continued employment. 01:47 Check to see if company policy requires employees to give two weeks’ notice before leaving. 02:26 Some employers faced with an employee giving notice opt to pay the employee for the two-week period he or she intended to work. 02:54 You may want to let your departing employee serve out his final two weeks, even if there is no legal cause to do so. 03:01 Remember, terminating employees when they give notice sends a message to other employees, who may choose to leave without warning when they find a new job. 03:18 If the employee is in good standing and can be expected to work diligently until departing, allowing the final two weeks signals your commitment to the remaining employees.

What is Management?

12:49
Despite a proliferation of management gurus, management consultants, and management schools, it remains murky to many of us what managers actually do and why we need them in the first place. Unless someone has actually performed managerial work, it is hard to understand exactly what managers do on an hour-by-hour, day-to-day basis. Managers at every level perform ten roles, which are grouped into informational roles, interpersonal roles, and decisional roles. The relative emphasis that a manager puts these roles depends on a number of factors, such as the manager’s position in the hierarchy, natural skills and abilities, type of organization, and departmental goals to be achieved. Management is the attainment of organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organizing, leading, and controlling organizational resources. There is a shift from the traditional management approach to the new management competencies that are essential in today’s environment. There are managers in all types of organizations who are learning to apply new management skills and competencies in oversight, results, relationships, and design. The definition of management also encompasses the idea of attaining organizational goals in an efficient and effective manner. Management is so important because organizations are so important. An organization is a social entity that is goal directed and deliberately structured. Organizations pervade our society, and managers are responsible for seeing that resources are used wisely to attain organizational goals. There are four basic functions of management, planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. We’ll explore each as we define management in today’s organization. The ultimate responsibility of managers is to achieve high performance, which is the attainment of organizational goals by using resources in an efficient and effective manner. Managers perform a wide variety of activities that fall within four primary management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Although some management theorists propose a long list of skills, the necessary skills for managing a department or an organization can be placed in three categories: conceptual, human, and technical. Good management skills are not automatic. In recent years, numerous highly publicized examples have shown what happens when managers fail to apply their skills effectively to meet the demands of an uncertain, rapidly changing world. Managers have complex jobs that require a range of abilities and skills.

Employment Law This Week® - Episode 106 - Week of February 26, 2018

04:49
Welcome to Employment Law This Week®! Subscribe to our channel for new episodes every Monday! (1) Sexual Harassment Allegations Lead to Shareholder Lawsuits - http://bit.ly/2BNIg5F Our top story: Sexual misconduct in the C-suite leads to shareholder lawsuits. Last month on this program, you heard that sexual misconduct allegations would start impacting shareholder value and reputation. Now we’ve got a case study in Wynn Resorts. After The Wall Street Journal uncovered multiple sexual misconduct allegations against Casino mogul Steve Wynn, the company’s stock fell nearly 20 percent. Wynn resigned a week later, but the company’s troubles were far from over. The first shareholder lawsuit was filed the day that Wynn resigned, and, to date, three suits by shareholders claim that Wynn and the Board breached their fiduciary duties to the company and its shareholders. Bill Milani, from Epstein Becker Green, has more: “The lessons here are clear. Harm to a company’s reputation and finances, when misconduct is alleged by employees at any level, can be damaging. When those allegations are made regarding senior leaders, regarding the face of the company as with Steve Wynn, as with Harvey Weinstein, the allegations can bring down the company itself. It is crucial that senior leaders, and even board members, be trained as to how to react when they become aware of allegations of sexual harassment or other misconduct by other senior leaders. Legal departments, HR departments, must have in place protocols as to how to respond when such claims are made. It can be difficult where a general counsel, a head of HR, is asked to investigate the face of the company or someone to whom he or she might report. It’s important in those instances that they are prepared to retain an appropriate third party, an outside law firm, to conduct an investigation, to react quickly.” For more, read our recent HR Dive article, “Sex Harassment Meets Shareholder Lawsuits”: http://bit.ly/2ojmIpW (2) NLRB Invites Comments on Employee Misclassification - http://bit.ly/2CEs3MW The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) is seeking amicus briefs on whether the misclassification of an employee as an independent contractor should be found to violate the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA). Former NLRB General Counsel Richard Griffin argued that misclassification violates the NLRA because it impacts the rights that employees have under the NLRA, including the right to engage in concerted activities with co-workers, join a union, and engage in bargaining. To date, the NLRB has not ruled on the question. Amicus briefs must be filed by April 16. For more, click here: http://bit.ly/2HFOxAS (3) EEOC Publishes New Strategic Plan - http://bit.ly/2sN3bTx The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has approved its Strategic Plan for fiscal years 2018 through 2022. The plan indicates that the agency will continue its focus on investigating and litigating claims of systemic discrimination while exercising its prosecutorial discretion “responsibly.” The plan also calls for increasing education and outreach and improving the EEOC’s internal operations. The document outlines 12 performance measures by which progress will be judged. The plan appears relatively routine, and reaction has been muted compared to the Obama EEOC’s Strategic Plans. What do you need to know as an employer or HR (human resources) manager to comply with Vermont law? Video TABLE OF CONTENTS 0:45 Does this apply to my workplace? 0:59 What are some examples of possible reasonable accommodations? 2:34 What do pregnant workers need to do to request a reasonable accommodation? 2:51 Can pregnant workers be required to take leave even if they can perform essential job functions with or without accommodation? 3:27 What if employees can’t complete the essential functions of their job with a reasonable accommodation? 4:20 Can employers request a doctor’s note to “back up” these accommodation requests? 4:35 The law says accommodations must be made unless they impose an undue hardship on the employer. What does that mean? 4:53 Does the pregnant worker need to have a disability in order to receive an accommodation? 5:12 Would employees not eligible through their jobs for parental and family leave be eligible for leave as an accommodation? 5:33 Is there a certain amount of time that employees need to have worked for an employer for the law to apply? 5:44 Does this law cover expressing breastmilk at work? 5:56 Are employers obligated under this law to provide paid breaks? 6:08 What happens if an employer ignores, fires, or retaliates against an employee requesting a reasonable accommodation for pregnancy or a pregnancy-related condition? 6:30 I have more questions. RESOURCES Vermont Attorney General-Civil Rights Unit: http://ago.vermont.gov/about-the-attorney-generals-office/divisions/civil-rights/ Vermont Human Rights Commission: http://hrc.vermont.gov/ Workers not covered by this law may have protections under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA). Visit the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s website Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) website: https://www.eeoc.gov/laws/types/pregnancy.cfm to learn more about your rights and how to file a complaint. MORE ON THE LAW Accommodations for Pregnant Employees (H.136/Act 21) requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations for an employee’s pregnancy-related condition, unless it would impose an undue hardship on the employer. This law closed a gap in state and federal employment law to ensure workers experiencing healthy, uncomplicated pregnancies are entitled to reasonable accommodations under the law when required. This law extends the same legal standards currently applied to individuals with disabilities regarding reasonable accommodations to individuals experiencing pregnancy-related conditions, regardless of whether the pregnant individual qualifies as an individual with a disability. Pregnancy-related conditions are those caused by or related to pregnancy or childbirth. The law specifies that a pregnancy-related condition does not necessarily constitute a disability. H.136 was signed into law by Governor Scott in May of 2017 and went into effect January 1st, 2018.
